I have a 1999 F250, 5.4L Super cab. When it shifts into overdrive under a load as in going up a hill at low RPM, it feels like it either has a miss or shudders, if you kick it back into 3rd, it goes away completely. If you are on level ground & overdrive, it does not appear to happen? has anyone had this problem or have any suggestions?
It sounds like you might have a bad coil, maybe two. Most of the the time you won't get a Check Engine light when this happens.
To cut down on lost time - and if you have the money - take your truck to a good reliable Ford dealership and let the tech do a driveability test using the WDS (worldwide diagnostic system). They can tell you within minutes.
There is a post here started by warmdye where he knew he had a dead miss, purchased a coil (COP = Coil Over Plug) and repaired via process of elimination. Of course it sounds like you have an occasional miss that might take more drastic measures.
Thanks for the suggestion. I was leaning more toward a miss rather than a tranny problem & hope that is what it is.
Yes I live in Arkansas. I was born in Dallas & stop off in New Boston for fuel every trip back to the big Dto visit family. Grew up in SW Arkansas & live near Hot Springs now.

Well...
If you can stop by Johnston Ford in New Boston, ask to have Buster May do the Driveability Test. He's a good hand. Charged me $36.00.
I had to hook-up to a load in order for the miss to surface, FYI.
If you take it to a reputable transmission shop they will usually do a road test at no cost. They would be able to tell you if its an engine or a transmission problem. Not ruling out a bad coil, but usually a shutter is a problem with the clutch in the torque converter.
i had the same problem with my 01 250 5.4 last week they first thought it was the coil, upon replacement of the coil the problem was still there, the dealer finally found that the #1 injector was seized up and causing the cylinder to not fire, the shutter was the tourqe converter not getting enough rpms when shifting . hope this helps
Did the shutter you had occur in every gear or just overdrive? Did you notice a miss all the time. Seems that if the fuel injector was froze up, there would have been an engine miss all the time. Did you get a check engine light? QR
no engine lights, ran rough infirst at low speed kind of a surging, noticed the shutter in 3rd and 4th gears more and if i tried the cruise control aroud 65 i got alot of surging so i would say it was doing some funky stuff all the time. hope my gas mileage goes up with all 8 cylinders working properly
