Truck runs good.. However I had my radio off and I noticed a sound. It only appears when I am driving along at crusing speed and then go to step on the gas. It is only when I step on the gas that I hear it.
The sound sounds like its coming from the engine and it sounds just like a loose bicycle chain. Like the chain is spinning but its loose a little. It sounds like I have metal flakes or something spinning around in my engine.
I have no noticible performance loss. Just when I hear a sound, I want to know what it is. Call it being pro-active?
I can name that tune in 3 notes! (Wow..flashback to the old game show days)
There are alot of names for it but mostly, its called PINGING. There are a few ways to get rid of it, and some just live with it. Some have changed their timing a bit, others have changed the fuel inflow, (I believe to richen it). Its just a matter of how you want to take care of it. I have been lucky enough so far to not have had the prob. but from what I have heard, it is common among specific Ford engines.
My 98 F-150 4.2 does the exact same thing!! I've searched these forums looking for someone else with this issue. I hear it often, but not consistantly. Its only at higher speed when Im getting on the gas. Its not gotten any better or worse. I guess after 117,000 miles I shouldnt worry about it any more!!
Yep, sounds like pinging.
I too have light pinging (2000 F150, 4.2 V6, 151,000 miles). I don't really notice it much during summer. Mostly winter -I think it has to do with the change in formulation for winter gas.
