It drives fine but when I turn "right" its like I have no power steering. I have to put both hands on the steering wheel and "crank" it "right". When I turn left though the steering wheel is fine. I can turn it with just one hand with no problem.
I checked the Power Steering Fluid and all is well.
So what do you think is wrong with my bronco?
Why can I turn Left and not Right?
Steering box supplies the "power boost" Try turning it with the engine off, and see if it is more difficult left to right. If it's only difficult with the engine running, then it's in the P/S Box. If you have a concrete driveway or carport (or a garage!) drive the front wheels onto a couple of sheets of newspaper. It will help eliminate the friction from the rubber so you can turn the wheel easily with the engine off.
Yes, but the power steering gearbox pushes the moving parts of the front suspension back and forth. The use of "boost" could apply to either the pump or the gearbox. The original question was "Why can I turn Left and not Right?"
Kemicalburns and myself took time to compose thoughtful, technically correct suggestions that might help bulldog18 diagnose his problem. Efforts like ours make this forum useful source of information. Please don't needlessly discredit the suggestions of others.
Heh heh. snap answers and remarks annoy you do they? You're not alone.
Let's say the "boost" comes from the pump, but the valving which controls it is internal to the steering box. If you have power assist at least on one side it's safe to say the pump is doing its job, I think. Sounds like the box is indeed the culprit.
If you don't know, a used junkyard box can be had off any 80-96 F150/250/350, 83-93 Rangers/Bronco II's, and 91-4 Explorers. If you get one off anything other than a 4wd F150 or full size Bronco you will have to change the pitman to reuse yours.
And rebuilt boxes are available at most parts stores, minus the pitman arm.
Thanks...everyone seems to says its the power steering gear box. Today I ordered one so it should arrive within 3-4 weeks. I'll then try best at "being" a Mechanic for a day or two. Thanks again for all your help.
