I have a 95 bronco w/ the 351 engine. I have a noise commin from the rear end when under load. Before I take it to my local shop I want to find out what some of my options may be. I have several questions if any of you out there might have the anwers.
What might I expect to spend on rear end work (price range)?
What might a used rear end cost?
What might a rebuilt rear end cost?
Well, my rear end blew apart in my '95 a few weeks ago and it cost me $1,200 cdn to repair with a used rear end. The quote was $2k if I wanted a new one.
I had the rear end in my 88 rebuilt and had 4:10's put in front and back differentials for for $1600. The shop I took my truck to said they would rebuild just my rear end for $800. It just cost me more because I wanted my 4:10's.
First, take out the fill plug and see if it has too much metal shavings stuck to it or not. Second, check the oil level and fill up if it's needed, and see if that helps.
With tax (8.8%) and core ($100) a limited slip rear end cost me a bit under $600 from a wrecking yard. You can get cheaper prices if you only want open, search more, or live in a cheaper area. The rear I got is apparently a very good one, and I kept the old one since I plan to rebuild it with gears for taller tires.
