Costco vs. X Plan vs. Negotiating
Costco vs. X Plan vs. Negotiating
I'm planning to buy a F150 FX4. I see that I can probably get an X Plan PIN number. I'm also a Costco member - how does the Costco discount compare with X plan? I've also read here that its not too uncommon to negotiate below X Plan pricing from a dealer. Also, the AQHA discount apparently can't be used with X Plan (and, I'm guessing, not with Costco either). So if I could negotiate a near X Plan price with a dealer (without using the PIN), I could use AQHA to get an extra $500 off.
Does Ford reimburse dealers for the X Plan discount? If not, then I would think a good approach would be to use the X Plan price (and my ability to get it) as a negotiating tool to get the dealer to offer the same (or even better) price without using the plan. Then the AQHA would be frosting on the cake (and, I assume, not cost the dealer anything).
Does this make sense? Am I missing anything?
Thanks
Doug

Usually the Costco plan is $XXX over invoice and there's no wiggle room. I believe, from reading here that the best deal is the X Plan and getting any additional rebates on top of that.. My last truck was purchases w/ the Costco Plan, but I'd be happy to get the truck at invoice (Minus any rebates)
Good Luck,

And if someone can get X-Plan pricing, which would be less than invoice on an F-150, why would you pay Costco more money? Unless you own stock in Costco, cut out the middleman and you'll save time AND money.
AQHA restrictions say you have to be a member for at least 30 days prior to the purchase. I was told that if the dealership accepts the membership number, gives me the $500.00 discount, and then later on it gets rejected by Ford, it will be charged back to the dealer. Does the dealer have ANY recourse in charging me back or is the done deal a done deal?

Figure about .84 for A/Z plans, .88 for X plan and .87 for invoice. Doesn't look like the X plan is doing any great discount, except you don't have to bargain for it: It's a set price.

I didnt qualify for the x-plan . The pin # I got had to be used by that person only . However , I told the dealer if they cant sell for x-plan minus rebates , I was walking . A few minutes later they went ahead with the deal . So it is true a dealer can and will sell at x-plan price plus rebates . I also had a $500.00 rebate from Ford's website. They sent it to me for looking up a truck on Ford's website . I was just at $10,000 off MSRP after all rebates and x-plan . 2004 truck purchased 8 months ago .
X Plan
I am a Sales Manager at a Ford dealership. X PLan is about $100 to $300 over invoice, depending on the MSRP of the vehicle. Dealers get reimbursed a few hundred dollars for doing the X Plan. As far as how good a deal, it's a pretty good deal. Can you spend 5-8 hours on a Saturday going from dealer to dealer and save a couple hundred dollars? Probably. Worth it? Not in my opinion. You can walk in to a dealer and get a great price right away without any negotiation. Watch out for a dealers adding useless adds to the price like window etching, nitrogen in the tires, and paint/fabric sealant. That's where a lot of profit is made. These are a complete rip off.

I just used my X-plan and it capped my dealer DOC fees at $75.00. You get the x-plan discount plus doc cheaper doc fees and you to take advantage of any and all rebates and or financing options. X-plan is straight up and no BS.

When I walk into a dealership and they don't want to negotiate and I go somewhere and save a couple hundred dollars then by all means it is worth it. Show them the money they missed and tell them "What you cant do someone else will" then walk out.
One plan I have and have used to good success is to go in and try to order a very praticular vehicle, but the dealer you go to has to have one your willing to live with or option package you already want.
Also have finacing ready to go so they know your serious, and then theres less haggling.
Know the compition, and don't be affraid to mention there highlights or percieved highlights. Lets say your looking at a 5.0 F150 say something like the Hemi has 380hp or more torque.
Its all a game, and don't forget to play it.

Your exactly right about that sir. The average salesperson gets to rehearse his BS speech about his products, say dozens of times per month. The average consumer gets to rehearse, say every 3-5 years, some more and some less. Bottom line, get educated.
