I am in the market for a new Ranger. I was supprised to hear that Ford is producing a DOHC 2.3L I-4. I have heard (although I can't remenber where) that the 2002 4.0 is being made in Germany. If this is true, where is the 2.3 being built at? Just curious as my local Ford dealer doesn't have any 4 cyl Rangers on the lot.
Thanks for all your help and kudos on a great site!!
The 2.3l engine used to be produced at the Lima Engine Plant, not sure the specific engine you are refering to is that engine. I heard a rumor Ford is phasing out all the cast iron engines, may be this is one of the casualties. Too bad if it is, the 2.3l engine made at Lima was darned near bullet proof.
Ford has been producing a 2.3L DOHC for about 20yrs, just not for us "yanks". The 4.0L v6 has also been around for awhile, the bottom end was produced in Germany, also known as the Cologne 4.0L V6. I have heard that the 2.5L I4 was around until '04.
Yep, the 2.5L (2.3L) Lima is no more. The DOHC 2.3 is the new replacement going into Rangers, Focus, and maybe some others. (Escape?) It will be used in both FWD and RWD applications. It is an all aluminum block putting out more HP and torque than the old 2.5 and the 2.0 in the Focus. It is also more fuel efficient. They may be built in Mexico, but I'm not absolutely sure.
78 Bronco Ranger XLT, 351M, 4 speed, Trailer Special
About a month ago i bought a new 2001 4.0 edge reg cab stepside. and i have to say that if you can find one of these, test drive it, and you will never even consider a 4 cyl again. i had a 93 xlt 4 cyl and dont know how i put up with that underpowered thing as long as i did....... well thats my 2 cent
I bought a 2001 XLT 4X2 Ranger around July 2001 with the 2.3 DOHC engine with 5 speed manual. My truck was built in New Jersey and the engine was built at the Dearborn Engine Fuel Tank Plant as is evident by the DEFTP sticker on the timing cover along with date and time it was built. I work at the Rouge complex for Ford and went to the DEFTP and sure enough they were building 2.3 DOHC. They may be built other places as well I am not sure. This is an all aluminum engine but it does have cast iron sleeves in the cylinders for durability. My truck runs great and gets 29 mpg hwy and 25 mpg city. 70 mph with head wind you will know if the A.C. comes on. Its a smooth engine and has good torque for an engine this size. Hope to put a 200,000 miles on it.
