I own an 89 Ford Ranger and the other morning I started the truck up and it went to start and after about a couple of seconds it died. Later after diagnostics, I have definitely determined that the truck is not getting any fuel, because I can spray fuel into the throttle body and it will start but will die out when the fuel rus out. I have change the fuel filter, and then I realized that there was no fuel being sent form the pump itself. I am under the understanding that this truck has an inertia fuel cut off switch, thought i have never seen it, I am reluctant to say that is it, because I have not had an accident for it to activate. I am thinking more along the lines of fuel pump relay, and or fuse. I know about the fuse under the hood in the fuse box, for the fuel pump, is that what they are calling the relay? I see a relay shown in the wiring schematics for the truck, I just do not know where it is located. Any help with locating this would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there a fuse on the interior fuse block, that controls the fuel pump, I do not think it is but maybe I am wrong, and if it is, maybe a location of which one it is!!!
I would start with checking the inertia switch, they can go off for no reason, it's on the passengers side, under the dash, near the top of the carpet. The only FP fuse is the one in the power distribution box. The relay is under the power distribution box, green. The way the circuit works is the EEC relay turns the FP relay on when the key is turn on. The EEC relay is activated by the ignition switch and the power for the FP relay comes from fuse 6. The relay then powers the pump through the inertia switch, the power for the pump come from fuse 1. Remember the EEC will turn the pump off after a few seconds if the truck doesn't start. To provide constant power to the circuit there is a wire at the self test connect that you ground to force the circuit on. The connector is rear of the power distribution box and has two rows of pins, one row of 2 and one of 4. The wire you want should be tan/lt green and be the right hand pin in the row of 4 when looking into the connector with the row of 4 down. Don't allow the pump to run for more than a minute or two, you can damage the pump. If you do need a new pump it is easier to remove the bed than it is to drop the tank.
