how can i tell if my '78 F250 4x4 has a D60? there are no stickers left on the door or door jamb. it has the fat tapered huibs, bigger than the hubs on the d44 on my '86250. and of course it is 8 lug and has manual hubs. what do ihave to look at to tell if it's a D60?
How many bolts hold the steering arm to the top of the knuckle? A Dana 60 will typically have 4 bolts in a square pattern. A Dana 44 will have 3 bolts in a curving line. There will also be 4 bolts holding the grease cap on the passenger side as well.
i just looked, it has 4 bolts on a square pattern on both the steering arm and the grease cap. if it's a D60, is it the same D60 used on the '86-newer F350s? could the axle be swapped under a '80-'86 truck?
i agree if this 78 runs save it. don't let it go under the knife. they are rare. Just my $0.02. i can't tell you what to do, i can only influence you. lol

don't worry, i dont plan to cut up my '78. it runs and drives and i will be plowing with it this winter. i was just asking for my own curiosity. the '78 is rusty and if the frame breaks i was looking for ways to get my money back out of it. (paid $1800 for the truck with beat up Meyer plow, in hindsight maybe a little much). i just got the '78 this fall and if it makes it through the winter i want to pull off the bed (it's shot) do some reconditioning (brake/fuel lines, clean up the frame somewhat) and put on a flatbed and use it as a beater/firewood truck. and plow with it in the winter. it has 4.11s (i think) and my other truck has 3.55s so it wouldnt want this D60 under my '86 anyway. i may part it out when the time comes.
Dana 60s are coveted by guys like me who have the TTB under the front of their truck. my '86 is pretty clean and i wouldnt mind a solid axle up front especially after getting this '78 but i will not be chopping this '78 up any time soon.
I have a king pin Dana 60 front from a 91 F350 for your 86.... swap ya for the one out of the 78.... I have a 79 F250 I need that diff for and was trying to save moving the springs to do it. 77.5-79 are 31.5 wide at the pearches...the 86-97 are 36.5. As long as you keep your swap years the same ( as in 78 diff in 78 truck) it's a bolt in job...done and done ! The 86-97 solid D60's will go in any 250-350 from 80-96.
Let me know if you break that frame. Heck I may even have a cheap 78 D44HD you could swap back into that 78 so it's still all working etc etc.
