Well I'll try to make this simple,I have a 78 ford shortbox 4x4...9 inch rear end,and the problem is the owner before me had blown an axle and messed up the housing where the bearing goes.So he went and bought a newer(80 and up )stly 9 inch axle ,which is slightly diffrent and put it in because the new style uses a seal in the axle tube about 6 inches in.When I bought the truck it seemed fine.So when I rebuilt this truck ,I rebuilt the entire rear end. That new style seal doesn't seem to last more than a month or maybe it just takes that long to leak out through the bearing. The problem I'm having now is I'm unsure of how far in to put the seal, seeing how it's not the right housing for that set up.Anyone ever do this mod?If so what's the proper seal depth in the housing????????HELP!
i just replaced the axle seals on my dakota (whole lot of trouble, pinion hold down bolt broke in half in the housing...) the original seals had a shoulder on them and fit right into the axle...the seals that came in from napa didnt have the shoulder. the seal should be seated in so it is flush with the edge of the axle. Im not quite sure if thats what you were asking though
Jason, I was having the same problem. I finally got enough silicon on the darn thing that it finally stopped leaking. It should work dry, but sometimes they don't.
Thank's I'll try alot of silicone..I had already tried a bit of silicone but it's still leaking. But my biggest concern is how far in to put the seal. There is nothing to stop the seal from sliding all the way down the tube if you push it.I'm gauging the depth by the smooth spot on the axle .but it's smooth for a good chunk.with the diameter slightly changing .That's were I think my problem is.
Are you sure you are using the right product in the right place? Go to another parts house and ask to see a seal for your truck and see if it is the same.
The 9" was used until 86 I think, and the differences should be on the outside of the tube not inside. Ford started using it in the 50s and kept it the same until 73 when the rear track was widened (longer axles) same chunk. They changed from a 28 to a 31 count axle spline along the way, but not the axle seal as far as I know.
In 1980 they went to a diffrent axle size and diffrent seal set up until 86 when they stopped using it.Otherwise yes they where always the same.I have one side diffrent from the other because of the two difrent styles .And I can't go back to the original style because the bearing seat in the housing is slightly recked...enough that the outside seal will not work....so someone stuck in the newer style seal and the newer style axle ..which the seal is in the tube about six inches..this is the side I need help with.
um you really dont want a seal on the inside of the axle or you wont get any oil to your bearings. kind of hard on bearing with no oil on them or grease.
i havent dealt with a half ton for a few years on my 79 i had my seals always leaked so i took it to les schwab to have them do i got new ones about twice a year for free since they have a warranty.
