1968 F100
I have a 1968 Ford F100 that I bought and was told it was a camper special. I have had some say yest it could be and some say that 1967 was the last year you could get a camper special in the F100. What is it that would tell me these things. Is there something in the VIN Plate that will tell, I know there is a body style number but what would determine if its a camper special. Unfortunately most of the trim is gone so I don't have the camper special emblem to just know for sure. Can someone help out here?

Half way down the first page...
"'68 & '69 Camper Specials and F350's had front marker lights made by Dietz. They ran off a separate circuit with a relay and circuit breaker mounted on the passenger side. This circuit also powered the clearance lights on the roof and the marker lights on the stake & platform trucks."

1965/79 Camper Specials came with a pigtailed wire harness/plug that was placed inside the glovebox at final assembly, to be used with camper clearance lamps.
This harness plugs into the C/S only taillamp harness that has an extra feed wire for this purpose.
This is the only way to prove it's a Camper Special, because there are no codes within VIN's or on Warranty Plates that denote a Camper Special.
You cannot assume it's Camper Special because it has a side tool compartment, 3 arm western mirrors and etc, because (excepting the harness/plug) all the parts that made up Camper Special packages were available on other F100/350's.

Incorrect. Where did you read this hogwash?
1967/72: Ford offered THREE different Camper Specials: F100, F250 & F350. All were on their respective frames, used their specific suspensions.
Ford did not offer dual batteries until 1973, so any previous year F100/350 that has this feature is aftermarket, were usually installed by RV dealers.
The same thing applies to sway bars, Ford didn't offer them until 1973, either. Were either installed by RV dealers or front end shops.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1968/72 F250 2WD's and F350's were available with dual piston caliper front disc brakes as an option, did not come with any package. F250's with this option have 12" x 2 1/2" rear brakes.
12" x 2 1/2" brakes introduced in 1966, will be found on F250 2WD's with GVW's of 7,500 & 8,100 lbs., and all F250 Camper Specials as standard equipment.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rear bumpers were an option for all F100/350's thru...at least 1979, did not come with any package.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With one exception, ALL outside mirrors were optional and all were installed by the dealers.
1967/72 F100/350's, Bronco's and Econolines came 'standard' with the same L/H el cheapo mirror used on 1967 Passenger Cars (C7AZ-17696-A).
Was placed inside the cab at final assembly. Mirrors were not factory installed because if the customer wanted something else, the holes in the door would have to be filled in and spot painted.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
25 gallon (22.5 gallon = 1970/72 F100 w/evaporative emission - mandatory in CA) auxillary fuel tank was an option for all 1967/72 F100/350 Stylesides, did not come with any package.
These tanks were installed on the inside of the left (drivers) side frame rail.
1967/69: The fuel cap pokes thru the quarter panel (bedside) above the scallop (bumpside) line, in front of the left rear wheel, almost in a direct line from the in-cab tanks fuel cap.
1970/72: The fuel cap pokes thru the quarter panel below the scallop line, in front of left rear wheel. Inside the bed is a shield that protects the fuel filler tube from possible damage.
Ford did not offer saddle tanks, these were only available aftermarket. The fuel caps are usually behind aluminum doors riveted to the quarter panels, or are located inside the bed.
Everyone of these aftermarket tanks I've seen (and I've seen dozens) were mounted on the outside of the left frame rail.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Onan Generator offered as an option for 1969/71 F100/250's, 1969/72 F350's. Did not come with any package. When factory installed, the left fender inner apron is unique to the Onan only.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1967/69 Camper Special's have script nameplates (C7TZ-16720-H - R/L same), mount on front fenders (quarter panel: Ford teminology for Styleside bedsides).
1970/72 Camper Specials have rectangular emblems (DOTZ-16720-D - R/L same), mount on cowl panels. But, there were three other rectangular emblems that mounted in this same location:
DOTZ-16720-A .. Farm & Ranch Special / DOTZ-16720-B .. Heavy Duty Special / DOTZ-16720-C .. Contractors Special.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't see the following on your truck, but who knows what may have occurred over the past 40 years:
C9TZ-15442-D (replaced C8TZ-15442-F) .. Marker Lamp-Amber-Rectangular Design-Front Fender Mounted.
Applications: 1968/72 F100/350 Camper Special / 1968/72 F350 Open Drive-Away's with DRW / 1968/72 F500/750.
The long ongoing problem is, most peeps have no FoMoCo literature of any kind. No sales brochures, no shop/owners manuals, no parts catalogs, no nothing.
All it takes...is for someone to type wrong info, then...since peeps have no literature and most don't bother to do any research, they believe it. Ridiculous!

I have a 1968 Ford F100 that I bought and was told it was a camper special. I have had some say yes it could be and some say that 1967 was the last year you could get a camper special in the F100.
What is it that would tell me these things. Is there something in the VIN Plate that will tell, I know there is a body style number but what would determine if its a camper special.
Unfortunately most of the trim is gone so I don't have the camper special emblem to just know for sure. Can someone help out here?

1968/72 F100 C/S parts are listed in the 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog and a friend of mine bought one brand new in 1970 from Don Kott Ford in Carson CA. He still owns it today.
For further info, see post 5.

Don't believe everything you read. Fordification claims that 1967 was the last year for F100 Camper Specials (C/S), but that's HOGWASH .. 1972 was the last year.

" 1965/79 Camper Specials came with a pigtailed wire harness/plug that was placed inside the glovebox at final assembly, to be used with camper clearance lamps."
For some clarification, most likely you are missing the plug that was placed in the glove box, at final assembly, for later use outside the truck to plug into the slide in camper. Did they operate only the clearance lights? Or the brake/tail lights also? Some campers obscured the tail lights of the truck.
"This harness plugs into the C/S only taillamp harness that has an extra feed wire for this purpose."
Where was this feed wire located on the truck? Between bed and cab? At the tail lights?

I say both of those statements are wrong. My dad had a 1973 F250 camper special he bought brand new as well. Scroll down this link and you will see a factory camper special in that year:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...l-special.html
My dad had one exactly like the brown truck pictured in that link. About half way down is a pic of a 1979 camper special package sticker..........

For the OP:
1968 Ford Light Truck Sales Features - F250 Camper Special
I think for 68, there should have been a "camper special" emblem on the BOTTOM of the front fenders........both sides.
67 had the 'camper special" emblems mounted on both sides of the cowl panels.

ALL 1967/69 F100/350's have the 4 way flasher switch mounted inside the glove box. Camper Special makes no difference. Switch location changed to the dash: 1970/72.
Camper Specials only: At final assembly, a pigtailed wire harness/plug was placed inside the glove box (as I recall, with rubber bands wrapped around it).
