Im trying to fit a v8 into my project offroader. My donor vehicle is a 78 f150 with the 351M and 4speed tranny which i think was the T-18, plus the NP205. All great parts ofcourse. I already have a dana 60 rear with posi and 4:56 gears plus a 44 front with a lockright and 4:56 gears. Im having trouble with this engine. I want something that will put out over 400hp and 450ftlbs of torque. I got a guy that can do that no problem no matter what engine i give him but we have talked and we dont like the weakness of the 351M or 400. I was thinking of the 351W cause alot of people seem to swap those into old broncos and mustangs aswell. Ive also thought about a 302. I want the 4speed tranny with the granny gear cause i love that tranny but i know it wont bolt to the Winsdor or 302. Any ideas on donor vehicles that have this setup already, or maybe any ideas on any other engines to choose. I dont have a lot of room, the only thing under the hood will be the engine and anything bolted to it. The radiator and everything else will be in the back of the truck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Don't throw out the M-block just yet. The 351M that you have with a 400 crank shaft and pistons and the block bored 30-40/1000's and you'll have the potential for a torque monster! Cam, intake with 4V carb, and headers and the engine is good to go. Add a doubler to the T/case and it should almost be unstoppable.
Im trying a similar swap and im using a 302. The 4 speed tranny will bolt up from what ive read but you need a small block bell housing motor mounts, and im still not sure about tranny mounts.Again this is only what i have read and trying to find out for myself also.
I'd say whatever motor you use it will need much better heads to meet your HP goals, and heads for the Windsor may be the cheapest. You should completely drop the 302 from consideration because it simply won't get anywhere close to those numbers at reasonable rpms.
looks like tater delux did a search trying to find some backup for what he was thinking.
i can tell you it is possible for a 302 to mate up with a T18 trans. i have the 2wd version (kinda sad) but it works and can drive, it does have the linkage style clutch. don't ask where it came from. but its in my 64 f100.
