Im trying to fit a v8 into my project offroader. My donor vehicle is a 78 f150 with the 351M and 4speed tranny which i think was the T-18, plus the NP205. All great parts ofcourse. I already have a dana 60 rear with posi and 4:56 gears plus a 44 front with a lockright and 4:56 gears. Im having trouble with this engine. I want something that will put out over 400hp and 450ftlbs of torque. I got a guy that can do that no problem no matter what engine i give him but we have talked and we dont like the weakness of the 351M or 400. I was thinking of the 351W cause alot of people seem to swap those into old broncos and mustangs aswell. Ive also thought about a 302. I want the 4speed tranny with the granny gear cause i love that tranny but i know it wont bolt to the Winsdor or 302. Any ideas on donor vehicles that have this setup already, or maybe any ideas on any other engines to choose. I dont have a lot of room, the only thing under the hood will be the engine and anything bolted to it. The radiator and everything else will be in the back of the truck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
A 429/460 will bolt right up to your M tranny and give you a good platform for a 400hp+ build. The problem with the W motors will be producing great low end torque, but that can probably be compensated for with gearing.
hi if hp and gobbs of torque are needed then throw away the lil 351w and go for the big daddy -a stroked out 460 big block monster! buy a stroker kit [crank, rods pistons, rings, bearings, gasket set, timing set,oil pump] you could make a 533 cid motor that would make way over 550hp and 575lbft of torque by just following what has already been done many times before[aftermarket intake, headers, carb, cam, roller rockers, larger valves, and lots of head work]you can install this in your truck very easy with a few aftermarket parts.your not going to find that kind of power in a lil 351w now are you and remember a big truck deserves a big block motor[torque].
