I went and talked to the local trans shop about the convertor shudder in my 92 and asked for how much it would cost to repair, since it has over 200000 miles he recommended going through the trans and do some upgrades along with a new convertor and it would cost around 1800 dollars. That is a little too much as the truck will basicly be used as a winter beater as soon as I get my 65 custom 500 on the road,I have been told that 94 and up trans are better and have a few upgrades from the ealier trans and it looks like if I repair it I will use a used trans and I would like to know in the 94 and up trans are prone to the convertor shudder like my 92. The 95 and up are supposed to be the improved models. I have a 94 and it went at 50K miles, mostly due to me not checking the fluid while towing, doh!
The tranny shop said the rebuild should take a new improved TC, Sun gear, improved pump, some improved pieces and a shift kit. So far, 35K miles of hard towing and all is well. My rebuild cost $2500 back around 97?? and I told him make it "bullet proof for towing", so your rebuild cost is not out of line.
If it was me, I would look for a used 95 and up tranny... BUT I am not sure if the 95 and up uses different computers so be sure to get some knowledgable info before slapping down your money. I think 95 is still OBDI while 96 and up are OBDII and use different computers which I do not think are compatible. If you have to use 94 and older, I would probably go with a rebuild, unless I could get a guarantee from the shop on a used tranny.
