302 Performance

What are the best "bolt on options" to increase the performance on a 302?......1989 Bronco.

well, you can add aluminum heads, edelbrock efi truck intake, larger thottle body, headers and exhaust . if that doesnt take care of you i would look into swaping over to a 351w which will give you a better starting point.

Headers and 3" highflow single exhaust never hurts either. All of the components mentioned are available to be CARB legal AFAIK.

your mileage would be the same with a 351.
i had a 302 and got 12/14 city, hwy. now with the 351 i get 12/16 city, hwy. and way more torque. but to each is own. just an fyi all those mods will run you around 2000 + total and may only gain you 50 -80 hp and similar in torq. you could get a 351 swaped in for less and add a few of those mentioned above and be making some power for sure. do your research before you start droping coins at things . heads, header and throttlebody could swap over to the 351 the intake cant

As of right now, I dont have the means for a swap. Plus, my 302 runs great. Just wanted to see how I could "beef" it up. What do you think a cold air intake would do for it?

whoa, kem I disagree with you here... kinda

I recommend avoiding that rediculously costly FIPK kit. Check out my gallery for my homemade cold-air setup. I did some research and found several instances where this type of setup far exceeded the benefits of an FIPK. Even making your own FIPK-style air intake is not worth the effort. With that type of setup, the air is actually hotter when it gets to the engine. $25 worth of insulation tape and a $30 filter is the best bolt-on air intake you'll get.

On the other hand, if you upgrade your throttle body, you might want to look at fabricating an intake. You'll still want the insulation, but a bigger TB needs more airflow than the stock box can give you.

i wasnt going to get into the whole hot air thing . but fabing his own would be cheaper then buying one for sure. I prefer my drop in filter and insulating the tubes but others like the larger cone filter sound and feel. to each his own

From: Destin/Ft. Walton Beach,
A 302 can put out over 400 horsepower with only three changes. Heads, headers, and 1.7 rockers. I can direct the naysayers to the site. We didn't even have to change the pushrods. As expected, the higher-ratio rockers increased the area under the curve of the stock cam, pushing output to 405 hp at 6,200 rpm and 380 lb-ft of torque at 4,300. Not exactly a truck engine, unless you run 4.10 or so gears, but people put down the 302 all the time. I would love to run against some of these 351's I hear about, with my 69 F100. I have a 351 in my Bronco, and I got beat by an S-10 Blazer with a 4.3, and an F150 with a 300 from light to light. And I got beat at top end by a PowerStroke Diesel. My Bronco runs great, but a 351 isn't much stronger then a 302. About 5 more horsepower, and about 25 lb ft of torque in stock form.

the 302 is nice. gotta love it one the best motors ford ever made. as for fords diesels,.....powerchoke. unless u get the cummins package. which ive seen. now

"About 5 more horsepower, and about 25 lb ft of torque in stock form." stock form is the key word there. the 302 is more of a car engine while the 351 is a much better truck engine, with very few mods, like headers, overbore and a cam u can get considerable gains with the 351. well enough said. i jsut cant wait to finish my 351w build and swap with the 302. by the way the total build price on the motor is only 1235$ including machining, and hottankin. alot less then the build mentioned for your 302. of course i have the time and effort and tools to do the swap myself so that should always be considerd
