Fuel filter change

I need to change my fuel filters. I bought both of them the other day. I can't find a book detailing the 6.0. The engine mounted filter looks pretty simple. Not to sure about the frame mount.

Any thing I should look out for? I assume I need something underneath the frame filter to catch fuel. Will the truck have any problems starting with the interuption of fuel?

Thanks for your help.

I just had my fuel filters changed and my water in fuel light still comes on. Can anyone tell me is it possible that with the two filters changed is it possible that there is still water in the seperator? or did they not change the filters?

I think if they changed the HFCM filter *without* draining the water separator drain, the water could stay over there in the little manifold and keep the light on. But boy, that would have been a pretty stupid way to change the filter! (Maybe the drain plug hex hole stripped out and they gave up on draining it?)

Or you could still have more water coming from the tank.

Or you could have the early '03 HFCM with the defective sensor that cruds up and stays on.

The water from the tank is out. It can't build up that much in a 1/4 mile ride. My truck is an 04 the defective sensor is out. so the only thing left is they didnot drian it.

Is it possible that you can replace the filter without draining it?

The question I am asking is that if they just change the filter will that drain the water out or will the water stay in there? Why I am asking is that I don't think that they changed the filter at all that is why there is still water in the filter. And I intend to dispute this on my credit card.

The fuel goes to the filter housing first, then on to the pump and water seperator ( I think the seperator is last). That's why if you don't get the cap back on right (tight) or your o ring is bad, the fuel doesn't pour out when you try to start it, the engine just dies. ( that's what happened to me the other day). But they may not have changed the filter. The local delership in my home town didn't even know there were two filters on my 6.0, which is why it never even slows down near that dealer.

I believe the drain plug in the HFCM manifold is lower than the filter housing proper... so removing the plug drains all the fuel out of the main housing, but removing the cap off the main housing will not necessarily drain all the fuel (and water) out of the manifold.

It's entirely possible they didn't change the filter though. If you were to pull it out yourself, you might be able to tell for sure. A new filter would not have gotten dirty by now, but if it's the old one it will look very dirty. If there's not the slightest drop of diesel on the frame rail behind the HFCM that would be another clue they weren't in there.

Are you positive there's no water in your tank? Not that it's likely, but if you got a big slug of water it could easily fill up to the sensor level in the HFCM in a 1/4 mile.
