First of all, I'd call it an FMX, but the books at the transmission shop call it an MX or Cruise-o-Matic. It's definatly got the iron case.
Anyhoo, I've posted this on the general truck page, but figured I'd post it here, too. I have a 1965 f100 352 with the MX/FMX transmission. When I got the truck, the trans wasn't installed, so when I went to do so, I learned that the speedo drive is missing. Here's the pickle: I don't know what it looks like, so if I go boneyard hunting, it's gonna be hard to spot. My trans has a large threaded hole on the right side of the trailshaft (oddly enough, it sort of looks like a water pump) where I figure some sort of adapter threads in. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, do you know if its available aftermarket so I don't have to go lay in snow under a truck in a junkyard? Anyone have a pic or a diagram or something so I know what I'm looking for? Thanks fellas.
Scott, The 65 came with the C-O-M tranny of the FMX family of trannys, 50s vintage.
The hole on the right side is where the speedo cable/gear fit. The only trucks that you would have to go under would be ones with the green dot selector at the wheel. I'm not sure when the C-O-M was droped but I know 65-67 would have then for the factory installed auto.
oddly enough, all the trucks i've seen in junk yards are either missing their steering column, or, if that's there, the steering indicator. strange, eh?
Problem solved! Went to a tranny shop and explained what I needed. He hemmed and hawed for a minute, talked to the old-timer that worked there, and told me to wait. About 10 minutes later he came out with a part that I knew had to be right. There's a steel gear with a shaft that goes through a bushing that is threaded on both ends. One end goes into the tailshaft and the other end is threaded onto the speedo cable. He told me that early C6s used the same setup as the FMX. He couldn't answer this question though: is there some sort of o-ring that goes on any of this stuff to keep the tranny oil in? Or is the bushing pipe threaded to seal the transmission and the speedo cable the seal on that side?
