Cool Problems with 99 Ranger

I recentally bought my 99 ranger 4x4 xlt used. When i tried to use it in 4x4 mode, it switched, but when i tried to to come to a stop, it made a loud grind/banging noise and started jerking forward real choppy like. I was wondering what it could be and what i could do. Is there anyway I can convert it to an AWD tranny, id prefer that over 4x4 since i want the power for city use, i dont off road much at all. Any help would be awesome

Are you in 4WD low on pavement? If so... can give some of the same issues you describe. If 4WD high?? no idea...

It sounds like it's engaged in 4x4 Low, instead of 4x4 High.
Not sure about the '99 but the '00 has lights on the dash for 4x4 and LowRange.
It won't want to engage or disengage from low range unless it's in neutral or Park.
It also won't want to disengage if it's in Park and there's a lot of pressure on it.
I'd make sure the front wheels are pointed straight ahead, and then slip it into neutral, then switch it back to 2wd, and then roll back a little in reverse, then stop and move into neutral, then drive, and see what you get.

That doesn't seem like a good idea. The cost to benefit ratio seems like it would cost way more than it would be worth, because the existing transmission and transfer case would have to go, also the front hubs, and the fuel economy would suffer a bunch.

I'd recommend swapping the Ranger for something with AWD first.

Converting a Ranger (trying to convert might be a better way to put it) to an AWD vehicle is impractical and not even worth considering.

It sounds to me like your hublocks are having problems engaging and/or disengaging. Leaks in the Pulse Vacuum Hublock (PVH) 4x4 system are one of the main causes of this kind of misbehavior. You can read up on the Ranger PVH system in this very informative thread:

P.S. Welcome to FTE!

I've heard of the Pulse Vacuum hub lock on the Rangers but my 2000 Ranger doesn't have it nor my friends '98 Mazda. The drive shaft seems permenantly locked to the front wheels. What gives?

Some of the '00 models did not come with PVH, Ford switched to the "constant engagement system" during that model year. Don't know how to explaing the '98 Mazda, though. Maybe it was modified?

Ok thanks Rockledge that explains it. Mine only has the transfer case disconnect so front driveshaft spins anytime truck moves.
