Smell from heater?

When I fire up the heater in my 92 F-150, it has a smell, that smells almost like syrup. I've heard of this before, and if memory serves me correctly, which it probably doesn't, it was something with the heater core. Anybody know what's causing this? At first it was nice, but now it's annoying.

I imagine your heater core has gone bad. It only takes a very small hole in the heater core for the smell to show up. Feel around under the glove box. You will probably find some moisture. The fix is to replace the heater core. It is easy. Remove the glove box and take out the hex heads securing the heater core housing. The heater core just sits in the housing. The one I replaced ran around 20.00 to 25.00 for the part. The job took about 1 hour. You might want to replace your heater hoses while you are it.

Be sure to shop around for the best price for a new heater core. I just replaced one in my '93 and the prices ranged from a high of $58.00 to a low of $18.00.

And with that price difference comes a difference in quality, as a general rule. It's not a huge job to change out a core, but may as well buy the best quality part, and do it once. You'll notice a difference in the amount of heat it produces as well.

That was going to be my next question is if the heater core affected the amount of heat the heater put out, this thing doesn't get very hot at all. Good to know. Thanks guys.

Good point about checking the quality. Being short on cash, I chose the cheapie. It puts out as much heat as the original.

I don't want to stray way off topic, but what would cause an exhaust fume type of smell? For some reason, I sometimes will smell that when my heat is on, and I wasn't sure if it was something with the heater core also?

Are you sure it is an exhaust smell? Heated engine coolant that flows through the heater core gives off a weird ordor. If that is what it is, then check the heater core. If it is exhaust, check your system for leaks...some fumes could be leaking into the cab. Since you notice it only when your heat is on, I'd guess it is the heater core.
