I have a 02 SPD with 55,000 miles, recently my truck would only idle and the
accelerator would'nt work. I replaced the accelerator sending unit, which is the
whole pedal and the sensors attached. It seemed to solve the problem and worked great right away. But, unfortunately, I drove approx. 100 miles and it's happening again. The check engine light only comes on when you push on the accelerator or when you unplug it. Any advise? I havent brought it in to check the codes yet, I thought I solved the problem.
any help would be appreciated,
smitty
I recieved a letter from Ford last week about that. There was a recall for vehicles equipped with the adjustable pedals that would fail with the exact symptoms you are having. Apparently not many people took advantage of the recall, so they extended it. Ford will fix it for free, and possibly reimburse you for any repairs that have already been made. I don't have the letter with me at the moment, but there was a post about this not too long ago.
Mine has not been fixed yet, but I plan on doing it soon.
Hmmm. Unplug the connectors for the throttle assembly and see if there's not some connectors that haven't "relaxed" and are not squeezing down on the pins that they are supposed to be in contact with. Also check for the minutest amount of corrosion, similar in appearance to the corrosion that appears on battery posts.
The recall on that is Customer Satisfaction Program 03B03. Just received mine the other day. Was not going to do anything because I live 60 miles from dealer. I think I will now.
thanks for all the quick advice, I'm looking into it this morning, First I'll troubleshoot and
see if I can get her moving, then I'll call my dealer and inquire about the recall.
I like this site, you guys are great!
thanks

Went this mourning to try to schedule to get mine in, they told me they are only fixing if you have a problem. It could be a check engine light or the accelerator not working. So I guess I will not get mine fixed on Ford. It will probably go out after the time frame is up. Just my luck!
Called customer service and they told me the same.
Huh??? I thought you were having a problem? Why would they not fix it?
I'm going to look at that letter again tomorrow, since I left it at the office. I thought for sure it said it was supposed to be fixed by Ford, symptoms or no.
If the pedal has been replaced, I'd do what Kwik advised, check the harness first, then you may have to check each wire for a short. My 02 had the same exact problem you describe, except it only happened in the winter or cold/damp environments. I went through 3 pedal assemblies before they accidentally made it happen on purpose, they found the offending wire and taped it up. No problems since.
I think ColtM4 is right on with my problem, both times the pedal went out it was raining
and cold. ColtM4 do you recall where they found the short, inside the truck our outside along the fender?
Ford is warrantying the last replacement pedal I purchased, but they said they
would only do it once. Also, I checked into the recall on the pedals and found that it is only for the adjustable pedals. Mine isnt adjustable.
I don't really know where it was to be honest, I'm just glad they found it or I'd be on pedal #10 by now. I know it was on the harness going to the pedal though. You could try to send me a private message and I'll give you some info so you can talk to my dealer. it was an exposed wire from what I recall, the report said they just taped it up. If they only replace your pedal one more time and refuse to fix the problem, I'd make sure you contact corporate HQ and file the complaint on that dealer.
