I have a 1984 F150 6cyl 4x4 with dual tanks and the gas gauge stopped working. I replaced both sending units about 4 years ago , one was bad and the other half way worked . Now I noticed the gauge not working for either tank . I grounded the wire running to the gauge and it pegs the gauge, seems ok. I guess I don't want to believe that both sending units failed at the exact same time. From what I can tell both sending units share a common ground , does anyone know were this ground wire runs to? Or for that matter does anyone have any other ideas? I hate to buy both sending units and find out it something else . I also have a second inst. cluster that I tried and still not gas gauge.
Yes it was a the sender , with the plug disconnected from the unit . That should tell me the the wiring from the gauge to the tank sending unit is ok but what about the ground side?
Use a test light & another 12V+ source. If the ground circuit is good, the test light will light up.
AL.
Edit...Do your senders have an independant ground wire?

You could also use the ground wire in question to jump to the sending unit wire. If the guage pegs when you touch the sending unit wire to the frame, but does not peg when you touch it to the ground wire you are wondering about, then the ground wire is bad. I don't know where it leads to, but it would not hurt just to add another ground wire from the tank to the frame somewhere.
Glad to see this post, I don't want to hijack the thread, but need help as well.
I recently purchased a 92 F150 on Ebay. We just got a new 5.0 in and discovered many electrical problems. We have resolved most so far.
All of the wires had been ripped out of the connector on the front tank. The dash is busted from the po trying to get at the tank selector switch. I have a 88 that still has the tanks so I cut the wires near the connector and spliced them to the 92. The gauge hangs in the 3:00 position and does not move. The pump works and has emptied the tank.

The rear tank gauge seems to function properly.
Where do I need to start, to correct this issue?

If I am looking at the correct diagram, you should have a red, and a darkblue/yellow going to the front fuel tank. You also might have a black and an orange? coming out going to ground. The orange is the ground for the pump.
Take the darkblue/yellow and ground it to a good clean spot on the frame. Turn the key on, and the guage should swing full scale one direction with the switch to the front tank. Ford changed the way their fuel sending units worked around the late 80's, so it might peg to empty or to full. With the key still on, take the wire off the ground on the frame, and the guage should swing full scale the other direction with the wire hanging in the air, touching nothing.
If this test works, there is something wrong with the sending unit. I guess you could also have a tank grounding problem like the previous post may have, if the above test does not work on the factory ground wire.
If the above test does not work, you still have some wiring issues from the darkblue/yellow, up front to the switch.
I took the plug off the sending unit and jumped the terminals then turned the key on and it did peg the gauge . I guess this confirms that the wiring is ok and it must be the sending unit . I just have a bad feeling about this its seems very odd that both sending units failed at the exact same time.
Sorry to butt in - I'm having the same problems except my truck won't start.
Can you tell me what order these wires should be in, from front to back? I have a new wiring connector that doesn't have any decent instructions and can't find a diagrahm anywhere?
