i've got a troubling issue if anyone can help me I would appreciate it.
I have a 1992 ranger. The turn signals work, the stop lights work, the backup lights work but the rear running lights won't come on. I've checked the grounds, the sockets, the fuses, & the bulbs. I'm out of ideas. Can anyone help?

Yes. The license plate lights do work. I had to replace both bulbs and one of those sockets also, but they are on now. I disconnected the wiring harness at its connection in the engine compartment and using a DC power supply I have, I powered up all the pins individually and everything seemed to work. I seem to be leaning towards the switch being bad but I don't understand why the fronts would work but not the rears. Does the switch seem to be a likely problem?
The rear license plate lights use the same wiring as the rear taillights. There should be a splice back there somewhere to split the wiring from the taillights to the license plate lights.
Look at this diagram. See how the brown wire leaves the headlight switch, and feeds the license plate lights and the rear taillights?
Thank you for all your time and efforts. The wiring diagram should prove helpful. I won't be fumbling around in the dark now. I hope this will help solve my issue.
