A while back I tried to repack the front bearings on a 01 F250 SD with 4WD, I followed the book during diassembly, but when I got to the part that the wheel bearing are in I read on the back "DO NOT DISASSEMBLE" that kinda spooked me so I put everything back together. Are there any special tools required? Or should I just leave it alone until it breaks? I would like to take the hubs apart clean it out and repack the bearing but I don't want to destroy the hubs trying to do it.
What would be some good signs to tell me if the wheel bearings have gone out, I have been trying to locate a thump noise coming from up front for over a month now and haven't made any progress as to what is causing it.
Yes it is a thump in the floor, I can hear it as well even when I stand outside and have someone else drive and come to a stop. I have checked everything I can think of underneath aside from pulling stuff off to see what eliminates the problem.
Drillerdan, just trying to understand a little more here, how could the ball joints cause a thump on braking, to my understanding they are all for the steering linkage. Unless you are referring to the big knuckle that has two points that mount to the axle.
Mine did that as well and it was the ball joints. Every time I hit the brakes it would vlunk in the floor boards. $600 later it was fixed, parts and labor
I have a grinding noise in the front end as well but it is only when the 4 x 4 is engaged. I had a look and on the drivers side, the shaft going into the hub assembly has play of about .1250. Does anybody know if the "Hub Assembly" has to be replaced?
Cangim, the ball joints are the two pivot points on the knuckle that you are talking about. A good way to check if they are bad is to jack up the front end and have someone push/pull the top and bottom of the tire back and fourth while you watch for movement. You can also feel a "click" for lack of a better word. No movement is allowed, if there is any, replace the ball joints. The wheel bearings can also be checked this way as well.
