I have a 94 Ranger XLT 4x4 Automatic(push button shift). When snow hit the ground this past week and I saddled up Rosebud (my red ranger)she refused to go into four wheel drive. I could hear the electric shift box clicking but the 4x4 light or dash light did not come on. She wouldn't shift into four wheel no matter what I tried. Has anyone had this problem or have any ideas on how to fix it. I sure do love rosebud but if she ain't gonna perform we are gonna have problems. THanks for any suggestions.
Well, you oughta know by now, if it's got wheels or breasts, it's gonna need maintenance. Don't give up on Rosebud just yet unless you want a younger model that hasn't been ridden as hard. Try this link, it's probably got the info you need.
I bought a '95 Ranger used that the four wheel didn't engage. I ended up replacing the hubs with Warn manual hubs. This cured my problem instantly. I don't know if it is the same symptom you are having or not, but it was cheap. Two hubs and a conversion kit, $110.00.
I'll say there is a 99.9% chance you have a bad hub on your ranger. Rangers manufactured from about 93-96 are notorious for having problems with the automatic locking hubs. If you were to completely disassemble the hub unit, you probaly wouldn't find anything that is in obvious disrepair, what generally fails in the hub is a large plastic bushing that just gets worn. Ford will not sell you just the plastic bushing, they make you purchase the entire hub which runs about $300+. I would have to agree with the person who posted earlier advising you to switch to aftermarket hubs, Warn makes excellent hubs.
