Serpentine belt on 97 Ranger 5 speeed automatic has always squealed when idling or wet weather when cold. At about 60K miles got unbearable noise all the time so had it replaced. At 67K the noise is back when in neutral. Any fixes? Mechanic is stumped. If you spray belt with silicon or water near AC compressor it stops for a while.
I've had squeeky belts on some vehicles in the past.
I squirted liquid soap on them and it quieted them down for awhile.
The belt will slip for a moment and then the liquid spins off.
It doesn't hurt the belt. I don't know exactly what it does to the surface of the belt other than soften it a little bit.
Have you ever popped the belt of a seen how easy the compressor turns. If that is fine (which most likely it is) at work we use some brake slider lube. I do not mean antiseize, this stuff is for the sliders which have rubber parts, so there is no wory of running the rubber belt. One other thing is make sure you use a quality belt because the cheaper ones are usualy a harder rubber which is more likely to sqeal than a more expensive softer one.
