How would I isolate which cylinder has a sticking lifter? I've got a ticking under load only when the engine is cold. It has continued without really getting worse for 5 years, but is driving me insane because I can't solve the problem. My next step is to check for a lifter sticking or rocker that needs adjustment. I don't want to rip into it and assume I'll find something that looks different. HELP!!!
Use a long screwdriver or other similar object, place the tip on the valve cover the other end in your ear. Go one cylinder at a time and listen. It will sound very different (much louder/rougher than the rest when you find it) and then you will at least be able to isolate the "tap" to one cylinder and possibly even to intake or exhaust if more pronounced to the left or right of the center of the cylinder.
Should add, I know you posted "under load", but if the lifter is sticking or there is a wear/clearence problem, you will be able to pick this up at idle with no load also. Sorry, should have mentioned this the first go-round!
Using a piece of garden hose really works well for finding such noise. Use the same way you would the screwdriver, one end to the ear and the other moving around on different things under the hood until you find the noise. It will show up loud and clear when you locate.
I would check the oil pressure. I fought this battle on my 1999 ranger 2.9L V6. Found it had low oil pressure, gage is just a switch, no real pressure measure. Should have about 40psi at 2000rpm. problem of low pressure is plugged oil pump screen. This may sound crazy, but I replaced the lifters and adjusted my valves before I found the fix.
