FYI…and I don’t know if the events are connected…but I just posted a reply to a thread, and a second or two after I hit send, my Norton AV popped up and said I had a Trojan.StartPage virus. To the best of my knowledge, my browser is all I have running…and I use spyware and adaware regularly. Good thing ole Norton caught it. Anyway, update you AV and beware.

we had something try to weasel into our Mac as well, which NAV caught and quarantined, but between the wife and me we're not sure where we might have picked it up. This is my newest web-group (and only, really), but I've never had an alert when logged in.
I was sitting here one nite, just a couple days ago, and received a warning that someone was trying to send a trojan. There are a number of people who send out thousands of searches for any online computer and try to insert things or see if they can find access. A good firewall and virus protector should protect you...as they did. I used to have a firewall called BlackIce and there were nights I'd get "hit" up to 1500 times by one IP addy. Keep everything updated and you should have great percentages of staying safe.
Run a firewall that detects and blocks port scans. People with dial up ISP's and AV software, wake up, that's not enough anymore. A firewall should be on all pc's. If a person doesn't know how to configure it, ask a buddy to help.
I have Cable internet. Inbetween the cable modem and the computer I have a Linksys router. That is my hardware firewall protection. I reccomend that for anyone with high speed internet. For my software based firewall I run Sygate Personal Firewall. Its a good program. I monitors both incoming and outgoing traffic. You can even tell it what programs can access the internet.
Firefox is a good browser. Started using it, and never looked back. I also have my router set to forward pings to a nonexistent port, and closed down a lot of other ports.
Still get spyware on rare occasions, but it cleans out fairly easily.
since we have a Mac, most of the software companies don't support (or can't write programs that work!) this OS. naturally, the $150 OS upgrade is supported. anyhow, Alladin Systems (no plug) makes netblockade that allows you to view and allow/block individual program requests for access. It's interesting to sit here and see what programs randomly like to access the internet and attempt to report back to their masters my life-story.
Another sweet one is branded software (like netscape) that allow their sponsors background access to your browser (check the "allowed sites" that are loaded by default.)
I don't know squat bout computers and when I first read that I thought it was some kind of new STD...of course, I started reading beyond the title and figured it out
he-he, got to get my mind out of the gutter
I have a cable connection also and have a Linksys router inline. I also run Norton Professional version, Sybot SD, and Adaware SE on a regular basis.
I know my virus and spyware protection is current as I update it weekly at a minumum.
I also run three different popup blockers whenever I am online.
I still get spyware and popups, but they are minimal and are caught by the software. Haven't had a virus in some time *knock on wood*
