Burning smell-89 Ranger 2.9L
On the way home....everything was fine.....then I detected a burning smell.....radio got static-y for a brief few seconds......I pulled over......checked under the hood.....nothing.....in fact, the smell vanished.....no further problems on the way home.....yet....disturbing.....lately, on & off, I have also smelled gas......most days never.....just once and awhile.....when I've gotten out of truck I've noticed .......This must be checked into now.....Can anyone give me some advice.......should I first get total diagnostics done?........Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

On the fuel smell problem, I'd check the fuel pressure regulator. It's probably about time for it to go.
The electrical smell is probably something grounding out. Installed a radio or anything lately?? I've seen a bad ignition switch cause the smell as well.
Not much help I know, but just trying to throw out a few ideas.

The valve cover definitely makes it smell bad and it happens intermitantly. My 88' Ranger and 91' Exploder have the same smell and the mechanics say they are notorious for the leaky valve cover gasket and there is a aftermarket one that works really well, I just have not gotten around to replacing it on the Ranger and the Exploder isn't worth it.
