Give me advice please!!!

I currently own a Probe Ford, and am planning on selling it and buying a Ranger in the next couple months.
I am looking at the 2000 Ranger 4x4's.

I know there is a 4.0 liter v-6 4x4 with automatic transmission and a 3.0 liter stick shift, 4x2.

I know the auto tannys in the probes are junk , and was wondering how they are in Rangers. I really want a manual but I want POWER too.

Are there any problems with this years ranger as well.. Please give me as much advice as possible.

Thanks.

This is just something a guy told me about his '00 Ranger. He had a 4.0 with the automatic. Said the trasmission had seals going out and the engine was making noises, its also a 4X2. But I didn't ask him about his driving habits. He could have been hot rodding it or something. Or he may not have taken care of it asa well as most of us Ford truck owners do. I have a '99 Ranger XLT with a 2.5 I4 with an automatic and have no problems. Bob

If you want real power, step up to the 2001 V6 4.0L SOHC 207HP motor. It is available in manual or auto, 4x2 or 4x4. Check out the Ford web site for details, the 2001 and 2002 are almost identical.

Ford's web site is difficult to use to get spec's. Visit a dealer for a brochure.. The 4.0L M/T is available.

I currently own a 2K 4x4 w/4.0L 5-spd auto tranny. I love the auto in this truck, and you're talking to someone who recently traded in his 7 mo old car because he hated the auto tranny in it. I have always owned vehicles with manual trans until that car. I ABSOLUTELY HATED IT. So when I test drove this, I really made sure I would be satisfied with it since I had a hard time finding the 4.0 with the manual tranny.

As far as perf goes, the tranny does a really good job of keeping the revs up in the motor and shifting right along the torque curve of the motor. The thing cooks! I have 33" tires w/4.10 gears and can pretty much light 'em up anytime I want when taking off. I couldn't tell you my 1/4 mi time or 0-60 since I have never been to a track but I can surprise quite a few vehicles out there. And I can pretty much guarantee you'll beat just about any mostly stock S-10 out there!!

Have a 96 automatic. Have had no problems. Also, 2003 Ranger will suposedly be "freshened", but I don't know what it will look like yet.

Give me advice please!!!

Jeremy,

Sorry to hear about the probe tranny problems. I have an 89 probe GL with 187k miles, and I swear, it will smoke my brand new 2002 ranger 4.0L. Anyway, my probe tranny (manual) hasn't had any difficulties, but I chose the 5sp auto in my '02 Ranger mostly because of the towing capabilities. Ford puts a fairly weak pressure plate in the manual ranger trannies making them more prone to failure under heavy payloads. My brother has a 2000 4.0L manual that will keep up with my 02 4.0L auto until ~35mph, but the 207hp from the 01/02 does beat out the 2000 engine after that.

My personal opinion: The manual trans will probably make whatever year you buy seem slightly "faster" than the auto, but the 5sp auto from 2000-2002 will last longer, pull more weight, and optimize engine performance. I feel the auto trans makes for a more versitile truck since I can smoke the tires in town AND tow my 18' ski boat over the mountains. I wouldn't repeated tow the boat without the auto. Just my 2 cents.....

My dad has a '95 Crown Vic. That trans has help up fine & only screwed up soon after he'd had $3k worth of front-end collision repair. Just leaky coolant lines which was a cheap repair. 4-speed auto with the OBD2 4.6l. That being said, I hate not having a manual shifter. Have to wait for powertrain brain instead of what my reflexes tell me. I drove automatics from my 1st to a few cars later. Then I got a Ranger stick. Only 1 running automatic later & hate thought of going back. The autos don't know to find a good neutral state waiting in traffic. Rather a heavy clutch pedal than stand on brake pedal for an hour's drive in rush hour. That's been my stance FWIW. Most guys I've known in this area prefer trucks with autos and reserving stick for sports cars.

This post was started back in 2002, what gives, why has it resurfaced?
As far as your fuel supply problem, explain your symtoms, someone on here should have some advice. As far as info on a system, I think it's good to have a chiltons manual for the rigs you own. A lot of good info in there on all the systems, including fuel.

Do a few mods to that 4.0 and you will have a screaming ranger for sure.
