Oil consumption between changes?

How much oil are you guys needing to add between changes? I just checked the oil in my 99' and it was 2 quarts low. It was full when I bought it. I have put about 3,000 miles on it since I got it. I don't tow anything but a quad on a small trailer on the weekends, but I do hot rod the motor a bit. Should I be concerned with the burned oil? BTW it doesn't seem to leak anything.

My '96 uses between one and two quarts between changes , I change it at 5000mi. . How many miles are on your truck ? Make sure the truck sets for five or ten mn. before you check it to allow the oil to drain back to the pan .

For the last 100,000 miles, my '96 has used 1 qt per 2500 miles. I don't consider that to be excessive. Mine spends 60% of its time loaded. One thing that appears to be rather important is the incline that the truck is sitting on when you check the oil; I changed the oil in the driveway last weekend and found it a quart low after loading the fresh oil, running the truck for 5 min's, then shutting down & checking the level after 5 min's drainback time (nose was lower). When i moved the truck to a level spot, the level was right on the money.

As for you concern, don't be. If you're going to change every 3k, add a quart at 1500. If you elect to change every 5k, fill it up at 2500. I have run mine 2 qts low before, but really don't like to; less oil = less cooling of internal engine parts.

It had been sitting all day on level ground. It has about 92,000 miles on it.

Yeah this is a little disturbing for me. I have always owned Toyota pick up's ( don't hate me!) before I bought this psd. I ran 7,000 miles between oil changes (mobile synthetic) and they never used a drop-ever. But I guess a diesel might use a little on cold mornings and such, right?

We won't hate you; you wised up & got a real truck! wlihntr, zero consumption is rare; some folks are of the opinion that no oil consumption is a bad thing. You must've found the rare PSD that has seated its internals perfectly.

yea i now???. i check it every other fill up and it dose not move, i am sitting here trying to think if there was a time i have ever added oil to it, and i cant think of one. i used dino oil 15-40 to 15,000 miles then switched to mobil 1 delvac 5-40

ps. just to comfirm, i went out and checked my oil right now and it is in the same place it has been sice my last change (right at the top of the oper. range). my last change was oct 8 right before i went hunting. i have driven about 2000 mi. since that. on my hunting trip i pulled an atv trailer with 2 atvs on it and the bed was loaded with gear.300 miles each way over 2 mounain passes(loveland and vail passes)

Red face

Yeah , one or two quarts between changes is nothing to worry about , heck years ago I drove a cab over Mack that used a gallon of oil every 1000 mi. ! I would carry a case of Delo in the side compartment .

My 2002 F350 uses 1-2 quarts between the 5000 mile change. The oil has never turned a dark black color between changes. I have been using the Motor Craft Power Stroke 15w40. I want to stick with a dino oil, are there any better choices than the Power Stroke oil? I have 34000 on my 7.3

Thanks

As long as the oil hase the correct API rating it should be fine . I have always used Rotella T 15W40 in all my diesels from my old 6.9 to my 12L . Detroit and have been happy with it . The reason the oil turns black in a diesel is because of the soot suspended in the oil .

I just checked mine and it seems to be 3 quarts low at 4000 miles (since last oil change)!!

I see a little spot around the drain plug.

I smell a little metal smell in the oil. Is there something damaged?

3 qt/4000 is approaching what I would consider a trouble point. If the drain plug is weeping, change the gasket at the next O/C. You shouldn't smell metal at all...
