First, If you haven't been there. Go to the Y Block forum here on FTE. Then go to John Mummert's Y block page. Like a kid in a candy store.Good luck

My 272, reds headers, blue thunder intake, msd electronic dissy, But you don't need all of that stuff dual exhaust and recurving the timming will do wonders.

We started out with a 1957 292 that has a .060" OVER BORE, Erson cam 296 duration and .520" lift, mallory unilite dist, edelbrock 257 2X4's intake, Sanderson full length headers, 13lb aluminum flywheel, roll master double roller billet timing set, C1TE steel crankshaft, ECZ-G heads, carter electric fuel pump. The Y really sounds good and I'm loving it!

Hey Kevin, you never posted your numbers on here. How does that Y run? Didn't you take it to Mid-Ohio?

It was SLOW! I still have alot to work out. The cam is HUGE and doesnt start working untill you get the r's up in the zone , about 3,000 to 6,000 rpms. With the stock 3 speed 1st and 2nd gears are really fun! but when I'd shift at 6,000rpms from 2nd to 3rd the rpms would drop down to at or below the 3,000 mark and then its a dog! I was only at about 4,500 rpm's at the end of the 1/4 mile, I would like to be closer to the 6,000 mark.

Plus I was running the OPEN dana 44 rear end. My launches were funny with the one wheel spin forever. So a upgrade rear is in the works ,I will be running a 4.27 gear instead of the 3.92 to see if the rpms are more desireable. A 4speed would also do wonders but i really like the 3 on the tree!

I took it down to EXPO in September and it was the fastest truck in at 17.91 but I lost first round to a 60 ford starliner. I will be there next year for sure with some more upgrades and maybe a little lighter truck. It sure sounds GREAT!

That weekend was the most fun just beating on the Y. I think there was 27 or 29 y block powered vehicles there.

I have the same basics in my 54 F350, block came from a 64 F600.

First of all is to get rid of those peanut valve heads, tons of choices in the 55-59 range that are a lot better for cr and valve size. I use the ECZ-C as Im not racing and the smaller valves will be a benefit at truck rpm's.

That intake is fine, flows very good and you can do a little clean up and port matching with the new heads. Top it off with a 600 Edelbrock or Holley and use an electronic ignition to fully burn the mixture. Im running a 3 carb Edelbrock 573 intake but I wanted the nostalgiac looks.

Get Mummert to grind a cam to your requirements. Also tell him which rockers you will be using.

Stock dual exhaust and low restriction mufflers. Headers are OK but lose low end power.

Any further increase requires machine shops, a lot of new rotating parts as well as more expensive bolt-ons. Set your goals and have fun.

Back in 1970 I had a 292 in a 56 F100 that would run the mid 15's with a Fordomatic (you could ratchet shift that trans!). The motor had the ECZ-G heads(ported & polished), cast iron 4bbl intake, Holley 650, shorty headers to dual glasspacks under the cab & an Isky E-2 cam. Had a 4.11 locking rear, too. Fun truck!
