Headers

I got a 1987 F-150 and one of the manfolds is cracked. I was just thinking about getting a set of headers? What a good header? I really dont want to spend more that $500. Thanks.

Which motor do you have? I loved the Bassani ceramic coated headers that I had on my 96 Bronco (351). They were much different from your standard header. Most in the industry use tubing that mimics the stock setup. The Bassani's were equal length, so there was no crowding in the collector, which can rob power. Each of the pulses arrived independantly. Bassani also has some great quality and craftsmanship. Their gaskets were pretty slick too. They were metal, but around each exhaust port, was a replaceable graphite crush sleeve. When fully torqued, this sleeve fully seated, virtually eliminating any chance of exhaust leakage. Plus, if you ever had to take the headers off, you only need to buy replacement sleeves. They just pop in place of the old units. Anyways, enough rambling......Bassani equal lengths

According to the manufacturer, they will bolt up to the stock Y pipe. When I had mine, I also had a Bassani high flow Y pipe behind it, so I never had to worry about it. You might want to search the 1987-1996 F-series forum. I know there are a few guys there who have the Bassani headers, so that question has probably been addressed directly before on your truck.

The ceramic plated is a high temperature coating like Jet-Hot. It is a thermal insulator. What does that do? One, it creates lower underhood temperatures. That, in turn, leads to a cooler air intake charge, which equals more power. Two, the coating is inpenetrable. It will not rust, corrode, and normally wont change colors (some slight blueing is normal).
