Hello,
Early 99 F250 7.3 PSD EXT CAB SWB
I'm looking to buy a 4" turbo back exhaust system. I will also need a catalytic converter as we have the emissions test here. Anyone know how much a new cat would add to the cost of the system?
Thanks
XLRS
from what I have found, delete the cat and pull a sticker off the motor that says you had a cat and you pass with no problems I just can't remember what sticker it is since I've never had one.
I'm not sure, but I know cats are costly. For no more hassle than it is to change, just keep your stock exhaust and swap back and forth for testing. Its only once a year.
I am unsure about the price for your 99,but I was quoted a price for my 97 at Ford, sit down for this one!! $1200.00. Needless to say, when I put my 4" exhaust on my truck I saved the old cat.I think the stickers for your cat is located either on the inside of your door or by the striker pin.I agree the emission test is a farce!

In general, cats are expensive for even gassers, why the high price,I have no clue maybe someone can answer that. The reason for me calling for a price was to see if the cat was worth saving and the possibility of future emission testing.

cats for gassers are just as bad, on a mid-pipe for a mustang it usually runs 150-225 a piece for hi-flow cats. Quite BS if you ask me. I am running an off-road X on my cobra right now, but it gets the same miles per year as an open track car, so it is the same as an off-road vehicle.

Isn't the catalyst platinum? That might explain the cost I'm not sure exactly how much platinum they contain, but I do know of people who go to junkyards and grab up all the cats they can get their hands on. Apparently they can recycle the platinum.
See if you can find out just what the emissions test consists of. If its just for opacity (in many areas, that's all they test on a diesel), the cat won't make a difference anyhow.

Yes in Washington where I live, it's just an opacity test.
The problems begin if you FAIL. Then they begin the visual test. If you are missing the cat and it was installed on the truck when it was built, then there is NO CEILING to the cost of repairs to get the truck back to legal.
Make sure that your truck is able to pass the test before you go in, MUCH less hassle.
Remove the power chip, bring the engine back to stock tune for the test and you should pass with a very wide margin. All else can remain: big exhaust, big intake, etc. Just get that extra fuel out of there. It will remove the smoke and opacity. For the states that measure NOX and grams per mile, the same rule applys. Less fuel=lower combustion temps=less NOX, less grams per mile.
