Hey All,
So I am going to turn in my Mustang GT and Bronco this summer and my plans are to get a Expedition. What do you guys think I can get with $6500?
Hummm,
I don't think a down-payment will go over well with the misses. Any idea of how much truck I could get for that price? I have been seeing '97 with around 100K on them from around my price; 4WD & loaded. Does that sound reasonable or am I dreaming? Also, what kind of problems do you guys see with Expeditions over the 100K
If you are finding them, then you're not dreaming.
The problem with high-mileage vehicles isn't one of just engine issues. Brakes, belts, hoses, bearings, tranmission, etc. also need to be checked out. Often, the driver's seat is "broken down" and small things like the steering wheel cover and pedals will be well-worn. Squeaks & rattles may also be prevelant.
Of course, I bought the '97 F250HD in my signature with 181,000 miles on it. Then again, I only drive about 500 miles/month. So, if your comfortable with the risk, I say snag the one you like best!
A Kick A$$ audio\video aftermarket setup (sell the cars yourself). After you go in and purchase a new 04\05 Expy. Buying a vehicle over 100K can be suicidal.
Sell the cars yourself and get a nice used low mileage Expy. A $6500 dollar Expy probably wouldn't be a good idea.
i bought a 98 EB with 150,000 on it about 8 months ago. I now have 177,000 on it and the only thing mechanical i've done to it has been to replace lower ball joints and replaced the sub. I have been very pleased with this truck. It was a one owner who kept every thing serviced.
This doesn't answer your question but you might consider going down in size alittle bit.. Explorer I would guess.
It didn't fit our tastes or family but it might yours.
I got my '98 Expy 5.4L 4WD XLT for roughly $4,700. It had 165k miles on it when I picked it up. It was a state surplus vehicle.
After around $1,500 in preventative maintenance, upgrades, and cleaning-up, she looks like a 10k mile truck!! And although the mileage is high, the 5.4 still runs like a champ ... no oil burning, smoke, knocks, or ticks (knock on wood). The 4WD & Trans are all good also.
So spend some time and look around. You'll be surprised at what you could find. Just keep in mind that whatever you find at that price you'll probably have to add another $1,500 is service to keep it going for another 100k.
Good Call Guys,
Everything said helps a lot! Any and all opinions besides the ones said already are more then welcome! I am going to sell the Mustang in June and I will have until August to fine myself a truck!
Just don't forget to set at least $1k aside to deal with maintenance & repair issues that may have been deferred by the PO. I would absolutely replace all fluids, hoses and belts on such a high-mileage vehicle.
I thought my 98 Expy was a JEWEL until it threw a piston/rod through the right side of the engine last Sunday morning (104k miles). It looks new and ran GREAT right up to the point of "piston departure"...
There are no guarantees (unless of course one is offered or purchased) with used vehicles...like that box of chocolates...you never know what you're gonna get!
