On a new 2005 6.0 PSD, when is it generally safe to install a chip, predator or whatever ? Of course past the 500 mile breakin, but is it ok at say 1500-2000 miles ? or better to wait until 10,000 which I guess is true break in. Not looking to drag race, but love the sound of 65 hp gain and mpg savings.
I just received my 05 Predator the other day.. Thanks MH.. Guess it all depends on how you'll be using the new found power.. My 1/03 6.0 had the tuner 'on' at about 2K I think.. Drove it conservatively anyway, most of the time and never did see 100HP tune.. I'm at 1050 miles on the 05, and will be dumping my oil somewhere between 1500-2000 miles.. Just my preference.. Probably overkill, but Oil/filters come out of the fleet stock.. My truck spends alot of time in the commute, and I service it as 'Severe conditions'.. After the first oil change the Predator will be installed.. After it goes in to Ford for it's first Free oil change at 5K, the gauge will go on.. During the first few thousand It'll be driven with reasonable care, unless one of them 'commuters' cuts me off!!!
Thanks, PSD. Thats what I suspected, Im more interested in the extra MPG of the 65 HP mode, and hapy to have the extra power in case I need it. Common sense rules.
I purchased a superchips programmer for my old truck 00 f350 7.3 ltr. Throttle response and tranny shifts were awsome along with power gains but I never saw mpg gains. This includes city/highway combo driving along with striaght highway. Unless you count 3 tenths of a mpg as a gain. I have been in three trucks of people I know now before and after chip or reprogrammer changes and none lived up to any mph change. MY 2cents dont waste your money if all you want is mpg
I saw it mentioned something about a first free oil change on new Fords. Is that true at all dealerships? I am ready to change my oil in my 2005 and would like to know.
Also, today I crawled under it to check the oil filter number and no oil filter. I think I found in on top. Are there any special techniques to changing the filter? I could not find anything in FAQ.

Not all the dealers offer a 'free' first oil change.. All of the dealers in my area do as a sales promotion, and to get you interested in bringing it back to them for either service or warranty work.. Try mentioning it to your 'selling' dealer if they don't do this service for you.. You never know!!
The oil filter is topside.. Two filter canisters there.. Oil on the right (passenger side/larger) and fuel on the left.. When you loosen the cap (do this first to drain) it will automatically drain the filter oil to the pan.. So you want to do this first before draining the pan, or a least before you replace the plug.. Oil filter snaps into the cap, and is just 'snug' tightened..
Nothing to different.... Look in the 'Sticky' Tech Folder in the 6.0 forum opening page.. The info. is there, as well as other service and tech help..
How are you like'n the 05?.. Mines doing great...

I just got back from an Elk hunting trip in Colorado. Had 900 miles on my 2005 6.0.4:10 gears when I left California towing four horses in a trailer and all the gear to camp for 10 days. I got an overall 10mpg on about 2200 miles. That included off road driving, idling to warm up and listed to the radio weather reports. It went up the mountains like they weren't there. Plenty of power, I have been considering a chip, but I dont know if I need it. Overall I am very pleased with the truck. It outperforms my old 2002 7.3 by far and has a lot more features. I especially like the shorter turning radius and the new dash guages are nice.

I'm gonna try it at 95K, this way if it messes sumthin up Ford may or may not fix it. At least I'll only be putting 5K on the line rather than 96K. Rather conservative over here.
