Block Heater/Antifreeze question

Im outside replacing a block heater......and have a real general question, the new one is in, but when I refill radiator with coolant, does it flow into the block via gravity or does it need to be "pumped" into there by the water pump with the engine running? I want to plug the block heater in, but am worried about ruining it due to it not being in contact with fluid.

thanks guys (its a freeze plug type heater)

Fill the rad,let it run with the cap off,it should drop down when it comes to operating temp and circulates, add more coolant.Keep an eye on the level for a day or 2.

If you are replacing the same amount of A/F that came out, if it all goes in then you are good to test it. The coolant will seek the lower level, air should purge via the check ball in the upper coolant manifold. To test the check ball for clear and clean, on a cold engine with a full system (rad cap on) squeeze the upper hose and release it you should here it tinkle/rattle.....

Did you orientate the element as required on the instructions.........

I completely drained the radiator, because it seemed when loosening the old one, like the stream of coolant coming out was neverending and was slowly draining the radiator, And im hoping the reverse happens for filling, instead of reusing the coolant though I just started over with new coolant while I was at it, so I dont know if the same amount was put in.

I did squeeze the hose and heard the sound you described before coming back and checking the forum, but am nervous about ruining the new block heater

I just did a new fuel pump also and shes gonna be a little grumpy about starting, thats why I posed this question in the first place, Id love to have the use of the block heater to help start it.

Thanks for your input

Had I been aware you were doing the job I would have recomended puting two drain ***** in the lower block drain holes this allows 95% drainage. The one just to the right and low of the BH is one, and at the rear of the block and low on the other side. If the rad is full coolant it has to be down there, you probably used around 29 liters not including the overflow tank right.Plug it in it should start to fizzle and rumble a little just like a kettle...........

Did you use low silicate A/F and SCAs................

When was the last time you cleaned the check ball in the upper coolant manifold. Driving with that much air would mean the heads may not be cooled correctly a very bad sign. Check the ball by squeezing the upper hose and releasing listen for the rattle, no rattle then possibly it's blocked.

ball works fine, have a four core super radiator, you can stand there and watch it flow, the moter is only about 1 and half years old, mabe its only a gallon or so,when i put the new radiator in it holds 1 and a half gallons more than the old one6.5 gallons total.
