I recently got a 1980 f250 for free and the only flaw was that all the wires under the dash have been torn or cut. I want to replace all the wires and i decided to rewire the whole truck, i question was where can i find a new wiring harness i have looked a lot of places and i really dont want to have to rip out wires out of another truck i want to put new ones in. So if anyone knows of a place to get new engine wiring harnesses please let me know it would be a great help.
Its hard for me to believe that some fool would go into a wiring harness that way. This person was probably trying to hook up a radio or something.
Are individual wires cut? Or are great bundles of wires just cut at random? Depending on the truck, inside wiring can be easy, or a nightmare. Let us know.
well the truck was left sitting for a while and people were messing with and completly ripped out the fuse box and a bunch of other wires and to top it off the pervious owner had a lot of spotlight and even these stupid turning lights on his brush gaurd and every wire even the headlight were hard wired in and did a horrible job during it. i thought that best way to approch this truck was to first redo the wiring, but i want new wiring i dont want used wires if this is even possible
I would unplug and tag anything that you can under the dash that you plan to re-use. You need to find a similar wiring harness to the one that is currently in your 250. A doner truck is a good idea. Then, you can do it yourself, and take your time with it. Having another truck around with good wiring is always a nice idea, just to compare things.
Best of luck in your work. Think how good you will feel knowing that you fixed it yourself!
that what i plan on doing and know that i did everthing the right way will feel a lot better thanks for the help and if you come across anything let me know anything is helpful
Didn't think of this last night when posting, but, if you get a doner truck harness, let it naturally flex itself instead of forcing the bundles to go in the directions you want. I believe that the bundles will naturally go toward where they went in the original truck. A nice thing about these Fords is that the top of the dashboard will come off and make it easier to get at everything. I replaced the interior wiring on a 1986 Pontiac 3 years ago. The previous 'owner' was in there under the dashboard using a saws-all trying to cut off a bolt that he had rounded off. He hot-wired the trigger switch and left it hanging on the bolt running while he did something else. Naturally, the blade popped off the bolt and fell into a large wiring bundle. There was almost a fire, as the new battery really heated up the short circuit. He cut thru 2 big wire bundles. Like you, I got the car for free. It took me about a month to get 'er done. Had the doner car, and a wiring harness diagram to follow.
I must have done it right. I just sold the Pontiac for $1250.
Painless is the fastest, easiest, and most comprehensive wire harness set you can buy. They sell them in different flavors, like stock and all sorts of customs for different type mods. No matter which one you choose, all the wires are labeled as to where they go, not just stickers but the wire itself is printed every few inches or so with what it operates. The fuse boxes are modern and well equipped.
Has anyone actually installed a Painless harness in your truck? I see on their web site that it would be an "universal" harness that you would use. It seems they base their products on GM applications.
