heres one for Ya'll with the history books to look up...a couple years ago my sisters father gave me a 1978 4x4 F-250 "Snow Commander" its full time 4wheel and has a 351m (i added a 500cfm 2bbl street avenger holley) and a c4 i beleive...im trying to find out if what he told me is true about it being a 1ton truck under the F-250 logo...it supposedly came factory from ontario with a plow on it...i was told it was a Penn-DOT truck back in its prime....it runs like a champ and u cant get it stuck with the 35" BF goodrich mud terrains i put on it....i love this ugly truck..i got the number off the front diff. the driver door and door frame....here they are....
front axel code: 3.54 D8TA ZE
610023-1
Driver door tag: X25SKO23852
155 SM X259 ABM G37E
08100 1977 11
Driver door frame: F26HCAG4113 9-77
GVWR 8100lbs
Front GAWR 4500lbs
Rear GAWR 5300lbs
i hope this helps...i double checked and all the numbers are correct...
any honest info is appreciated.....thanx....
BTW: im trying to get my pics on my puter...hopfully it will be soon.
That's what my truck was. They generally call it a "Snow Fighter. You should have a Dana 60 front axle. I'll give you $50 for it. Sounds like a nice truck!
they aren't the most common but I wouldn't call them rare. now if it actually has a C4 in it THAT I would call rare more likely it has a C6 tranny though
Not really a 1-ton truck. The snow fighter package included the D60 front axle and probably a stiffer suspension. Maybe a heavy 3/4-ton, but not a 1-ton truck.
i asked about 1ton because i replaced the axel knuckles and ujoints and the ones Napa gave me for a F-250 were too small...i had to use F-350 ones.and according to the haynes manual and tag on the drivers door..the tranny code is G and that shows a C4 in my haynes book....
proper way to identify the trans is looking at the pan, hayes manuels have some notorious misprints that can almost be funny I don't have a book to decode the door tags but that would make it a big block bellhousing C4, and that is just not something ford did in trucks, (not even sure they ever put the C4 behind the big blocks in anything but I won't say never with Ford)

That's because the front axle is the one used in the 1 ton trucks. However your rear axle is probably also a Dana 60 which is the 3/4 ton rear axle. 1 tons generally had a D60 front and a D70 rear. I might be wrong here but it seems to me that the Snow Fighters used the same front leaf springs as the regular F250's. If you do a search in the 73-79 forum you'll find a TON of info on them. Just remember that to make the search find all the words you have to use pluses so go +snow +fighter and you'll find some detailed threads.
well....maybe im doin it wrong but i searched like u said +snow+fighter and only came up with the threads i posted....ill try again later..i thank everyone for their input, i was wondering did i post in the right thread to maybe find out more about my truck through useing the numbercodes above??or does anyone know of a way to find out the history on a vehicle this old?? Thanx again everyone........

She's been around . . . do you really want to know? I don't know where the vin decoders are but they'll have them in the 73-79 forum. Btw, you searched the offroad forum only, not the 73-79 forum. Go there and search in the upper right hand corner under "Search this forum" and you'll come up with plenty. Try this link, though I'm not sure if it'll work: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...earchid=396763 There's a lot more specific info in that forum about the details of the old trucks whereas this forum is more about the 4x4 aspects of all years. Not that you can't ask questions here, it just might not provide you with the best answers.
Found a few good threads...still reading through more...BTW i was wrong about the book i looked up my tranny code in...its a chilton not a haynes manual.....of course chilton's could be wrong as well........but i sure like thier wiring diagrams though!!!
