Side Exit Or Out the Back?

I just put a flareside on my truck(81 with big six) so the single stack just doesn't look right anymore. I have an 18inch (I think) glasspack that I would like to keep on there. I can't decide what to do after that. Single side exit, dual side exit, or duals out the back. Which of the three would have a deeper, not-so-ricer-ish sound? Thanks!

Single 2 1/2" out the back sounds the best to me; but, sometimes it's a matter of taste. Also, single out the back is not so loud in the cab.

The lesser volume going thru each pipe may produce a lower frequency and thus produce a lower tone - Not sure - I base my thoughts on my 2 1/2" single out back with a 21" turbo muffler.

I would like the looks of duals but also don't want the sound of a beer fart. I have some pipe laying around so after I make a Y-pipe I'll have to play around and see what sounds good. I really wish it wasn't 20 degrees out. Anymore opinions also welcome.

Well, unless the engine is really built up, anything more than the single out the side is kinda overkill...But haven't compared the different type setups...In general, I prefer out the sides. Mainly cuz both my trucks have campers, and if you have the pipes out the back, you are much more likely to suck fumes back into the camper, under the gate cracks, etc..Also, if the exhaust is close to a chrome bumper, it will usually start to rust it out after a while.
If I had duals, I would have them out the sides, in the rear. IE: normal stock setup...MK

I have a turndown on my 2 1/2" out the back - I got it from LMC and it has the ford imprint in the end - it looks great and keeps the exhaust directed down away from my trailer and boat.

You forgot the last and best option and that's dual stacks right through the hood - tractor style.....at least you'd be a little more unique

Just playing around.

When the '97 F150 first came out with the side exhaust in front of the rear wheel, my 87 F150 was needing a muffler. I went to the local muffler shop to have a new one put on with new rear pipe. It just so happened he had a new 97 side exhaust and muffler combo takeoff. He had just changed it out to duals on a brand new truck.

I had him mount the new Ford take off muffler and pipe combo. I have been running this setup on my 97 LB, 300, 4X4 since then. It is real quite, which some don't like. Being stainless, it still lookes new, and my rear quarter and bumber do not show any damage from exhaust that a lot of the others do that have factory exhaust.

Best thing, it only cost the labor to cut off the old and install the new. The pipe hangs a little lower on the older model, as my bedsides are not as low hanging as the 97, but it really looks pretty good.

Back to topic, I like side exhaust. I bought a 79 F100 XLT new. When it had 400 miles I put on headers and true duals, with Hush Thrush mufflers. I put pipes that turned out right behind the tires. The seperation of the exhaust, along with both pipes angled slightly toward the ground, really gave it a nice, deep, big block sound, even though it was a 302. It was not loud, just enough to make people notice.

Everyone, even my ex-wife, used to comment on how good the truck sounded.

Boy, I miss that truck.
