when i went to prime the oil in my 302 the other day all of the lifters pumped up but no oil ever went through the pushrods. can a bad lifter cause this?
Are the lifters new? Are you spinning the oil pump drive fast enough to get oil all the way up top? I did a rebuild once that wouldn't prime - it was because in my haste to get it done I left out the gasket between the pickup tube and the pump....
Try spinning the pump faster and see what happens. Doubt it is a bad lifter.
no rebuild at all, the motor had been sitting for awhile with no intake on it andwas froze up. so i pulled the heads and pan off pulled a few caps off to check for wear but thats about it. i was priming it by attaching a 1/4 in socket to my 18v dewalt and putting it on the pump shaft through the distributor hole. the drill was fast enough to prime my 460.
any ideas, im stumped, and really want to get this motor going
since no oil is getting up any of the pushrods, perhaps the oil pump is worn....
I guess your last post leads to several more questions.....why was the motor out? why was the intake off? was it locked up before it sat? how many miles? does it turn over freely now? what are your plans for the motor?

No it wasnt locked up before it sat, im unsure of the miles but by the looks of things it was rebuilt not too long ago, and yes it does turn over freely now.
the thing that made me think it was a bad lifter was that when i was trying to prime it, i noticed one of the lifters was letting a ****LOAD of oil run back into the valley. so i just figured that was the problem, and figured id ask here if there could be anything else that could cause this
I wouldn't think one bad lifter would rob the rest of the engine of oil pressure but stranger things have happened. Is the pushrod plugged up? That may explain the oil coming from that lifter. I still think oil would make it up the rest of the pushrods even if this one lifter was wide open.
Take that pushrod out and look to see if it is plugged. Then, since it is open already, pull this lifter and one other and compare the resistance when you push down on the pushrod seat.
You could even try swapping two lifters and see if the problem of oil seepage follows the suspect lifter. Can't hurt.
What speed is your drill turning at? Maybe try an electric drill and see waht the higher speed does..
Have you pulled the lifters and pushrods to inspect them for bolckage? Also as stated before it's possible the pump is wore and not supplying enough of an amount of oil to the top end.
yes i checked them all for blockage and cleaned them all very good, i dont see how the motor could stay together all those years with a bad oil pump though. it has to be something i did to the motor
