I am 16 and I am getting a Scout and it will be lifted, 33" tires, soft top, roll bar, NP435 mabe but definetly a manual, has 4.27 gears. I want to make this a daily driver and some off road, hills, light mid, snow, occassional rocks small.
I was going to run a 300 but it was too big, the 250 six does not make enough torque but plenty of hp I do not want speeding tickets.
I want at least 350 lbs of torque at 2000 rpm, atleast 11 mpg My bronco 2 gets 5-10 and not much torque, I do not need to rev past 4000-4500, Hp is not important. want to be able to conquer steep truck trails. I like edlebrock but am open minded since I do not know much about v8s. will spend some time on the highway cruising 55-75 mph and I know that 4.27 will empty a gas tank at 70 mph so I may ge gear.
should I go 351 oor 400 or something else?
willing to spend 1500 on engine, rebuild kit, balancing , head work mabe, Headers,

Maybe even a 302, but the 351 is definitely the way to go for what you're wanting to do. Scouts are generally smaller, so you don't want a ton of weight making it front-heavy, regardless of power, it will kill it's forward-moving capabilities because of the sinking. Edelbrock stuff is good, yeah. Pics!
Dang i forgot about the 392, I had a 3 ton hauling truck with a 345 and i overloaded it all the time ran 3400 rpm at 60mph on the highway constantly the engine outlasted the truck. Also had a 79 scout2 that had a 304 that engine outlasted the scout, then went into a 2 ton bucket truck It ran 8-10 hours a day 250-300 days a year for 8 years it was running strong when i scrapped the truck. I.H. engines were made for torque i do belive the right side of your chart would win in all comparisons you might want to look up the figures to be sure though. EDIT I was wrong on the IH winning on all the above comparisons
both are 1979 models
IH 304, 122hp,226 ft.lbs weight 700lbs
Ford 302, 139hp., 250 ft.lbs,
again both 79 models
IH 345 150 hp., 263 ft.lbs. weight 725lbs
Ford 351w 144 hp., 275 ft.lbs.
here is a 74 392 and 78 400m
IH 392 196hp. 316 ft.lbs. weight 765lbs.
Ford 400m 158 hp., 276 ft.lbs.

My dad bought a 1960 International truck in 1967. We had a hell of a time finding parts for it, even from the IH dealer. Seems that the truck was shipped with a list of the major parts, and the customer was supposed to keep track of it. Naturally, we didn't have this list.
Our truck had the big six. It was a real sleeper truck. Didn't look fast, but would fly.
Best of luck with your Scout. They are fun vehicles.
IH engines have plenty of low end grunt, problem is they all weigh a ton and dont rev worth squat. Of course you really dont want a race engine in a 4WD mudder. Find yourself a nice 392 and pop it in. Should be plenty of old International V8 trucks or engines floating around in old bone yards. You could also go inline 6 too, thier much better on gas and have a nice flat tq curve 500-3500. Thier labled as red, black and blue diamond engines.
Homeuser01: Same problem north of the 49th. Had a guy at work that had a '68
IH in '72 and everytime he broke something mudding or off roading with us his truck was down for a month or more while he waited for parts .
His came with a full parts list and he had to order them right from IH as the dealer did not stock any parts .
