Good luck with that cornbinder. IH engines pretty much last forever with just minor valve jobs. Is there no engine in it now?

I am going to try to keep this truck under 3000 lbs empty, THe 302 is nice and light but the 351 makes more torque per pound of engine I think. WIth Edlebrock it is about 300 lbs @ 2000 rpm I theink and 180 @ 2000 for the 302.Mabe a 390 might be a nice with an Rv cam and 500 or 650 edlebrock and headers. I know how tough Intranationals are my dad used to have one but they are heavy..

Thanks...
I like Diesels but I am looking for simething with a carburator so I can work on it.
when making torque the more of these the better right: displacement, more flow at lower revs, compression?

i don't think i'm supposed to recommend other sites here...sorry mod's if i'm breakin any rules. but i have a 77 scout II and whenever i need any kind of tech info or advice i always head to the binder bulletin home page. it's your one stop for anything international/scout related. a great source of info. for binder owners. good luck with your scout....i've had one scout or another in my garage for the past 10 years.

I don't know much about scouts but isn't less than 3000lbs a little ambitious? A 2004 RX-8 weighs 2800 - 3000 lbs.

As for the motor, a 302 or 351 can pretty much be pieced together to give you exactly what you want. I personally like the small diesel idea though. YOu might be able to find a land cruiser for a donor. Probably a good idea to stick with something you can get parts for and won't be expensive to build up.

Swap an FE in. They cannot be beat for tq. The 352's put out 210hp and 350ftlbs stock. The windsors are good but a little low on tq compared to the FE's.

Also, the FE's way around 700 pounds. They are huge.

Hunter, it’s all about gearing. You could run a 12hp B/S engine with the right driveline setup. This is a pretty good calculator to check out, I don’t think the reverse is calculated for all transmissions though. http://www.dfw-tx4wd.org/Tech-Dept/Tech-Dept/gears.html.

THat calculator worked great, the stock 4.27 gears would work great with nv4500 hd and 31" tires. If I could lighten the 360 a little with edlebrock intake, headers ,ect
with higher scompression and more flow I think a 360 in a scout would be almost unstoppable.

While torque is very important I think you are focusing on it to much. First, peak torque (what you are looking at) means very little. It is the Torque curve and where peak torque falls within that curve that is important.
As a few guys have mentioned gearing is what you need to be concerned about. Axle gearing as well as your overall gear ratio (tire dimensions effects this as well) are very important. Much more important then how much torque an engine makes.

5 to 10 MPG with your Bronco II? What have you done to it? I get 18 to 22 MPG with my Bronco II and expect to get similar results when I swap a 5.0 into it.

BTW, I once owned a completely stock 70 Scout. It was AMAZING off road and would climb anything you pointed it at.

Completely stosck I got 3-7 then I disconnected the exaust line from the right exaust manafold to the intake and It lost a slight low end power due to loss of flow but I thint that exaust is dead oxygen and I think that live oxygen is better. I get 8-9 around town and about 10 cruising now.
