I have an '89 F150 with a 302, completely stock, no changes to emissions, nothing. I just added a "Y'd" out dual exhaust after the catalyctic converter, no mufflers, all pipe, sounds great, but when I deccellerate, it back fires a lot. Is this common trait? Or is there something wrong with my truck? Which would be weird because it runs perfectly fine, to me anyway. Is something out of tune? How would I tell what is wrong? Is there a way I can overcome this?
It's not a problem or a backfire. You are hearing a pressure collapse in the pipe due to the loss of backpressure by having no muffler. It will not cause you any problems and if you need to fix it, install a muffler inline. Actually, if you install a low restriction muffler, like a flowmaster, chances are you would still hear this noise.
Cool...I can live with the noise, hope the cops can too
I had no idea what the noise was, I love my truck, don't feel like harming it!
The "popping" noise really echoes through the tips...not sure if I should leave them on now.
If you think its loud now, wait till you get some mileage on those pipes. I took the muffler off my 96 5.0L 2 and a half years ago, it is much louder today then when I got it back from the shop.
Lol! Hahaha...I like that "Goofy kid" behind the wheel. You've pretty much summed up everything there is to say about me. So it's perfect then, the exhaust stays!
Mine sometimes does a different sound though. This happens at light throttle. It doesnt sound pretty . Oh well, I'm gonna cut one of my cats off and put a single chamber flowmaster.
