What transmission does this have????

I posted a question on the 80s truck thread and didn't get any nibbles so trying again here on the tranny thread........

OK, as I had posted, thought I was going to pick up a 85 Bronco today for my donor truck to swap axles and make my 2WD F-150 Lariet a 4x4. Door and VIN codes over the phone showed it was a Dana 44 TTB, 3.55 gear ratio with AOD tranny and 302 same as I have. Engine had bad heads but everything else was supposed to be good. Everything should bolt right in right? WRONG.

Drove down there today, 200 miles and the Bronco had been modified and was nothing like what I thought. I have no idea what the axles are but they look a lot more beefy than mine. Might be 9 inch but this doesn't worry me too much because I can always swap both axles if need be and those would be a bonus.

Transfer case is a Borg Warner instead of the NP205 or 208 I was expecting. Will it hold up to abuse of a F-150 Supercab?

Tranny is the mystery and reason I am posting. I have no idea what this is and it is also bad. Shifter won't go past D, fluid smelled burned etc. The pan on the tranny is a rectangle but then tapers slightly on both rear corners and has a hump at the rear part of the pan in the middle.

I was thinking maybe it was a C5 but the photos I see on the web don't quite match as their humps in the pan or more towards the middle. This hump is only an inch and a half or maybe 2 inches wide at most, is at the rear of the pan and is rounded kind of like it is housing a round gear or something.

Does anyone have any idea what this tranny is? If we can identify it, is it worth rebuilding or should I have my AOD rebuilt with a short shaft to hook to that transfer case or should I just scrap this whole idea until I find a different donor?

Any idea what an otherwise good AOD would cost to rebuild and have a short shaft put in instead of my long shaft? ( I know C6s are better and I could get one on Ebay or froma junk yard but I really want to keep overdrive so I can get some gas milage. I drive this truck to South Dakota and Missouri 2-3 times a year and go a few hundred miles to LA every few weeks )

Thanks,

Lee

On the t-case, F150's used the BW1345 in the '90's and F250's and 350's used the BW1356. Whichever Borg Warner you have will probably be fine in a half-ton.

On the tranny, C6's have 17 pan bolts and a one-piece case/bellhousing and are 3-speed. I'm sure you know what your AOD looks like . Can't help you on the C5. In the rare chance that it could be an E4OD, those have 20 pan bolts and a GM TH700R4 has 16.

The 9" axle has a welded-on rear cover (no cover bolts) and a removeable bolt-on 'third member' that comes out the front of the axle housing.

Thanks, it is a 1345 and wasn't sure how it would handle the extra weight of a supercab. I was hoping for a NP205.

The tranny isn't a C6, C4 or AOD and as I said, it doesn't match the web pictures of a C5 as the part that hangs down is too narrow and too far back. I read elsewhere that there were some Brog Warner trannies used though I haven't seen it on any reputable web site or listed as an option anywhere.

I think I will just go ahead and buy it if he will lower his price and swap out the axles but leave the front disconnected and use my 2WD setup until I find a tranny.

Thanks,

Lee

Is it the shape of the pan gasket that doesn't match up to a known tranny or is it the bottom surface 'bump' you described that is wierd? 4wd tranny pans are usually deeper and sometimes are not flat on the bottom. How many gears does this tranny have? Also, does the tranny have a one-piece bellhousing and case or a bolt-on bellhousing? Is the case ribbed or smooth? The only Borg Warner trannies I know of used in Fords were manuals like the T18/T19 4-speeds.

It sounds like this truck has been mucked around with a LOT. The case should have been an NP 208. 205's were discounted several years before.

The tranny should be a C6. The AOD didn't come out until '86 in the Bronco. The E4OD would take a LOT of work to swap into that truck because it's electronically controlled. Someone would have had to swap in the motor, complete wiring harness, and tranny in order to get it working.

I guess the easiest way to tell is does the tranny have overdrive? There should be an OD cancel button somewhere, or both D/OD detents in the gear selector.

SoCal's right - the only BW trannies were manual 4-speeds.

Pics of this thing would help...
