Are EGT Probes Universal?

I'm switching from a banks six gun with speed loader to an edge attitude juice combo. Not a big fan of removing the egt probe in the manifold, pluggin it and drilling a smaller hole for the edge. I called Edge and they said that the one from the speed loader will work since they hook up the same with the small bolts. What do you guys think? How do I know which wire goes to witch?

PAN,

What size hole did you have to put in for the Edge thermocouple?

If it is a pipe thread (1/4 NPT) and your new thermocouple uses a smaller pipe thread, you can use a bushing to reduce the size of the existing hole to match your new thermocouple without plugging and re-drilling.

I don't know if all thermocouples are equal in electrical terms, but I do know there are a couple varieties of mounting arrangements.

Yes you are correct, I drilled a 7/16 hole and tapped it with a 1/4 NPT tap. Supposedly the edge thermo is 1/8. So, I take it that I could go to a plumbing store and get a reducer. What material should it be though? Will galvanized or brass bushings seal up? I don't remember off hand what is in there but it looks like aluminum or something. I know it isn't coming out without taking the threads in the manifold with it. After I put it in, I tried turning it out just to see if it would come out and it made one full turn and got so tight that I couldn't even turn it with a footlong wrench. So sounds like the reducer is the way to go once I find out what it has to be made out of.

Thanks Again
Paul

My preference would be to use a brass bushing.

My concern here is that you say you can't get the old one to turn out. I would highly doubt that the existing probe is aluminum. I would suspect that the probe is stainless or another related alloy. Those fittings do not have to be gorilla tight, just good and snug. Even if you damage the threads in the manifold, you should be able to chase them and repair them with the 1/4 pipe tap. Again, you are not trying to seal a steam pipe in a nuke plant, just stop the exhaust gasses from escaping and getting into the cab.

Hopefully the Edge probe is one of the smooth sided probes like the one I got from ISSPRO. You install a 1/4 pipe to 1/8 compression adapter into the manifold. Then you slide the probe in and tighten the compression nut to hold the probe at the correct depth.
