Red Light Cameras
#16
I hope you don't mind a neighbor dropping in but having been born and raised in Williamsburg I peek in now and again.
Also being on red light cameras for over five years now I thought you might like whats been found;
Collisions due to run traffic signals are down.
There was an accusation large enough to gain media attention that signal timing had been shortened. Assurances from the city but no definitive conclusion.
The amount of money the city (Charlotte) makes is almost ridiculously low.
If you want something to look forward to they're working on speed cameras now!

sorry i didn't jump in sooner, or i would have voted (reluctantly) for them, i think.
i don't like the gov't intrusion or rampant spending on pet projects one bit, but i like morons on cell phones in 5000 pounds of 'road menace to society' much less... "i'm in a hurry, and i'm much more important than you are"
hate to be a nattering nabob, but i have to agree with 93.
you are not the only person on the road. wait your turn. solid white lines mean don't change lanes here. wide solid white lines at the intersection mean STOP HERE. don't get into a blocked intersection even if the light is green. yellow lights do not mean "you have 5 seconds to make it," - they mean stop if you reasonably and safely can... the light will be RED soon!
how they work? i'm not sure if there is a video presence, but my understanding of the system is that it takes two pictues of the offending vehicle. one as it passes a predetermined point entering the intersection (cam cannot operate unless light is red), and the other upon exiting the intersection. don't know if it could catch the drivers that have already passed that predetermined point while the light is green, but exit while it's red - i hope it does, myself.
va pilot website would probably have the answers.
