Talking 04, 150-diff fluid

Is it pretty doable to change the rear diff fluid yourself? What does one need to complete a job like this? also, how do you know if you have the 9.75
or the 10.25 rear biff size.
Thanks again..

Its pretty easy if you can get to the rear cover (might have to lift the rear
of the truck) the cover is held on with 13mm bolts. may need a something to
jam between the cover and the housing to break the silicone seal. I use a thin but fat screwdriver. Ford doesnt use a paper gasket, its a cemeical sealant.
the best stuff is the ford black silcone (goto the dealer to get, it comes in a caulk tube.) You wont have the 10.5" ring gear, it is not an option for this truck.
you eather have the 8.8 or the 9.75. Most depends on the engine size.
If you have the 4.6 - most likely you have the 8.8, if you have the 5.4l
more than likely its the 9.75. shouldnt matter though for a fluid change.
or you could look on the tag on the passenger side of the truck on the rear axle
(a cover bolt goes though the tag.) Get the old fluid 75w140 synth.
Ford is not using the fehp 75w90 crap that the truck came with. If I remeber
right, I think it holds 3 to 4 quarts depending on the ring gear. dont forget the friction modifier if its a trac loc. hope this helps you out.....

It did, thanks, I have the 9.75.
Also, I was wanting to go with amsoil synthetic which claims
you dont need any friction modifiers, How true is that?

Im getting a feel from the rear diff like the plates are grabbing a little
to much in turns.

If your getting clutch pac chatter, I would take the truck in for service. There is a new set of updated clutch packs for field repair, One of the reasions why Ford changed the specs on the fluid, to try to prevent the chatter.
I cant tell you how many rear ends in f150's explorers and exped. I do for that.
I'm not a big fan of anything Aims sells, I prefer Factory fluids (If ford uses it for warrenty, Its going to be a good fluid or ford would not back up there warrenty) I have also seen a dealer claim a repair non warrnety because of
the wrong fluid. I know this is hard to prove, and usly does not happen,
although the customer left the bottels in bed the the truck.... although there is more to this story on why.

C-burke, I must not have a F150 then because my truck has a 10.25" rear. All the HD models come with it in a 4.10 ratio, check the Ford website.

Question Rear Diff

I've got the 3:73 ratio. The problem Im getting feels like the limited slip grabs a little like its not slipping good, It will do it on take off under normal acceleration in a straight line or turning. I meant to mention, I had a 91
Ranger XLT that I kept for 5 years and put 120k on. I baby'd that truck.
Changed the oil every 3000 miles etc... I use 5W50 castrol. Anyway,
the truck started to smoke right before I traded it in. wonder if the constant use of heavy oil was the cause

The F150 never came with a 10.25 ring gear. A few years back (97) ford did make a F250 in the F150 body (not sure why) that would have had the 10.25 as an option.

When the explorer and expedition came out with IRS rear, they came up with a new fluid HPFE fluid. since then there has been rear clutch pack chatter isuses.
Ford came up with some new clutches made with carbon inserts, but still have the chatter. The latest using the new clutch packs, ford went back to the old synth fluid and XL3 friction modifier.
