I cant figure out why my 76 Highboys dash lights are not working, I replaced the light switch and replaced all the bulbs and fuses. Also, the orange lights above the headlights do not come on with the lights but do work for turn signals, and they are the right bulbs, and the dome light wont work but has a good bulb/fuse. I thought all this would be fixed with the new switch, but it didnt work that way. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
Get a testlight or voltmeter, and take the switch out, but leave it connected if possible. Turn the headlights on. Your front marker lights are fed by the brown wire coming out of the switch. You should have 12 volts on the brown wire. If your taillights are working, then you probably do have 12 volts on the brown wire, and your problem with the front lights is going to be a grounding problem, or the brown wire feeding the lights up front has a problem.
The instrument lights are fed by the blue/red wire coming out of the switch. See if you have voltage on this wire when the switch is on. I am not sure what wire feeds this section of the switch with 12 volts, but in the later models it was a tan/white wire. This fed power to the switch for the marker light section and the instrument light section. The headlights are fed by a different wire(I think it's orange black).
In other words, the headlight switch has multiple sections, and they are fed by different voltage sources. So one part of the switch can work, and the other part can be dead.
