Could be an adjustment of the switch. Try re-adjusting it.

i thought of that and according to the haynes manual i'm suppose to be able to adjust it - but i dont see how - it's not the gm type where you can adjust a nut to lengthen it - it is a flat rectangle type that i am suppose to be able to bend up or down - while it is installed however it does not seem to act that way - if you know how to do this please let me know.

thanks

just thought i'd post this back for anyone else out there who is having the same trouble ( and i know you are cuase i see alot of ford trucks with late brake lights) before the 80's ford used the gm plunger style brake light switch that worked perfectly and was adjustable, somewhere along the line ford thought it was a smart idea to take something that worked so well and replace it with something that doesn't - nor is it adjustable,i just grabbed a switch for a 90 chev pick up from the parts store and fabbed a length of flat bar with a 45 deg bend and attatched it to the lower steering colum mount bracket - i have brake lights "now" again and not just when i'm at a complete stop-

Just for s***s - giggles, trade in the new switch you bought for another new switch."new does'nt mean good".I just recently went through same problem on a 72 LTD with a "new/bad" brake light switch.
