Thinking about buying a Porter Cable compressor

I'm looking at getting a Porter-Cable CPLKC7080V2, which is a two stage, oil lubed, 175psi unit that puts out in the neighborhood of 17SCFM at 90 psi.

Anybody have one of these and want to comment on how they like it?

Cheers,
ROB

I'm also looking at the Sears Craftsman Pro model 16780, with basically the same stats as the Porter Cable. They're selling it for $800 and are throwing in a $180 impact wrench for free.

Any horror stories with Craftsman Pro compressors out there?

That sounds like mine. I believe it's made by DeVilbiss. I think DeVilbiss also makes the Craftsman line. They just throw different badging on it. I've had mine for about a year and a half. I've used it for grit blasting, running air tools and an HVLP paint gun. I haven't had any problems with it. Been real happy with it. I have a 40 gallon pressure blaster that I use with it for grit blasting. I wired up a 220 line in my old garage. Turned out the breaker box was discontinued and I had to pay $60 for the breaker. Ouch! Didn't have that problem in my new shed. Be sure to extend the drain so you can reach it. I added an elbow and about a foot of tubing to route it out from under the tank. Drain the tank often, especially in the summer when it's humid.

I think Goobzilla has one, too.

I certainly do! Great compressor so far, runs every tool I've thrown at it.

I do need to extend the drain line someday, but I will miss laying on the floor of the shop to drain it

Thanks for the feedback. Once again, FTE to the rescue.

I'm laughing at myself after you pointed out they're the same machine, Kevin! Duh!! I should have looked closer at the pictures online. There appears to be only very minor differences in the plumbing, but the pump, motor, and tank are obviously the same.

I'm glad to hear it's a good machine for the variety of stuff I'm likely to run into with the truck, including blasting. The stories I heard about guys having to wait while the compressor caught up with them sounded frustrating.

Now, to convince the wife I really, really need this for Christmas...or better yet while the free impact wrench plus $40 off sale is in effect!

Cheers,
ROB

Compressor?

Hey Guys, Is it possible to get this level of performance from a 120 volt unit? My 5 HP Sears compressor just won't keep up with he demands of the bead blaster I just bought. It's a piece of junk also, but that's a different story.

Thanks...

It is next to inpossible to get the CFM requirements to run a bead blaster from a 120 compressor. They usually require 9-12 cfm all the 120 compressors I have seen only put out 4-7 cfm. the only thing I can suggest is to run 2 in tandem

Thumbs up

Hey guys, I haven't crawled under my compressor for years. Napa sells an air bleeder that screws right into the bottom of my old craftsman. It is used by truckers, Just a bleeder with lanyard attached, so you just pull on the line any time you want to bleed out the air and moisture. I wish I knew the parts #, to help you out, It cost under $10.00. I'll try to find the number.

Just got back from Sears and ordered model 16780, 175psi/17CFM. I've been out in the garage with the measuring tape trying to figure out where to put it, locate the blast cabinet, etc. Christmas came early!

I'm in the market for a compressor myself. I'd been looking at the build of the thing more than the brand of it. I'm looking to get a three cylinder which is supposed to last longer and run less often than a one or two cylinder. Had not made up my mind if I should go to an 80 gal tank or stick with the 60 gal. Any words of advice on that?
Also too, does anyone know if there is any difference between a vertical or horizontal tank? Certainly there is the space issue, but is there any difference in performance with the pump at the end of the tank vs the middle of the tank?

That lanyard bleeder sounds cool. The easier it is to bleed, the more likely I'll do it as often as I should...
