Oil Useage

I have a 04 F-150 Super crew with the 5.6L Tritan. It uses 1 1/2 quarts of oil in 2000 miles andIhave 7300 miles on the truck. Two dealerships say that this is well within specs, has anyone else had this problem? MHaas

oil usage

Had a '98 conversion van with the 5.4 used a quote every 2000 miles from the day it was new until I traded it in at 112K. my new F150 with the 4.6 has not used any oil in 3000 miles. Some do some don't, go figure.

I have a04 F-150 Super cab Lariat. Just turned 3000 miles, most highway. My truck has not used any oil. I am very satisfied.

I also had a 1998 with 4.6 and a 1999 with 5.4, neither truck used oil.

I had a 1984 F250HD with a 460 in it that burned a qt of oil every 500 miles. Ford said it was normal until it got to 400 miles. Well it did.. They changed the valve stem oil seals three times between between 10,000 and 20,000. Anytime I wanted all I had to do was go to the dealer and they'd throw two cases of Motorcraft oil in the bed of the truck. Well, finally at 20k I said this has to be fixed because we only had 2yr/24000 mile warranty's then and the dealer agreed. They were going to drop a new engine in the truck. I had to tow a 28ft boat to Fl... When I stopped for fuel the first time I grabbed a qt of oil figuring it needed one, but it didn't and it was right up on the stick. Same thing the whole way down and back. 3000 miles and didn't burn a drop. It was like someone threw a light switch on the oil burn problem when the engine crossed the 20000 mile yard line. I put 220,000 miles on that engine I don't think it burnt 3 qt of oil after the first 20,000 miles.. That 460 was a real engine, quiet, *****....I hope this 5.4 turns out to half the engine that was..

It probably had something to do with you actually putting a decent load on that 460 and getting the engine to fully seat. These new engines are built to much tighter tolerances so there isn't as much wear when surfaces mate, but on the other hand these fancy synthetic oils can prevent even necessary wear required for parts to fully seat together.

For Mhaas, I'd recommend loading up the truck and/or hooking up a trailer and working the truck a little bit. These are trucks, you can't baby them like little econoboxes and expect them to run right. That's a big V8 under the hood and it needs to pull something.

I am on my second truck with the 5.4L engine. The current one is an 04 and the last one was an 02. Neither used any detectable amount of oil from the time they were new.

A mechanic friend reminded me a long time ago that you are more likely to lose oil to leaks than by burning it. It might be worth trying to convince a dealer to check this possiblity.

I just can't bring myself to believe that we should be expected to be satisfied with a modern engine that uses/loses any appreciable amount of oil when new.

I have never had a Ford that has used oil. The oil looks new in my 04 5.4
But don't ask me about GM. I had a Cadillac that used 17 qts of oil in 730 miles. I resurfaced the highway between Salt Lake and LA. One of those dumb 8-6-4 engines that GM had. I understand that they have brought that engine back. They said it needed a better computer. Yeah right.

Mhaas, are you sure you're reading the dipstick correctly? The oil doesn't have to be at the top of the line just inbetween the "full" area. My 02 5.4 and previous 2000 4.2 never used oil. But it looks like it needs more oil on the dipstick. Its supposed to take 6 qrts. of oil, but some people use 6.5-7 qrts, because they want that oil right at the top of the full line. Just something to consider, don't mean to say that you don't know how to interpret the reading on the dipstick.

There is no reason that your engine should use any oil. It is brand new and shouldnt use any. It doesnt matter if you load it down with weight, or haul anything..... your engine shouldnt burn ANY oil what so ever. Your dealer is...... they are not right. It should'nt burn anything but gasoline. Mine doesnt burn any oil. Its a 5.4 also

My 4.6 has used about a quarter of a quart in 2000 miles. Most of it in the first 800. I had a rear main leak, splotching the garage from the first day. It stopped by 800 miles, no work done or any treatment. Just up and stopped.
